CLEVELAND, Ohio — Rain has forced the postponement of Friday’s Guardians home game against the New York Yankees. The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday with the opener taking place at 12:10 pm and the nightcap at 6:10.
It marks the eighth home game shelved by rain or cold weather this season for the Guardians, who have played the fewest home dates (34) of any MLB team. They’ve had one road game rescheduled due to weather and another due to a COVID-19 outbreak.
Left-hander Kirk McCarty (0-1, 10.29 ERA) will face Yankees righty (Gerrit Cole 6-2, 2.99) in Saturday’s first game while righty Aaron Civale (2-4, 7.20) matches up against lefty Nestor Cortes (6- 3, 2.51) in game two.
Fans holding tickets to Friday’s game can use their exact same ticket to enter the 12:10 pm contest on Saturday and do not have to exchange (they will not be allowed to attend the night game unless they hold a ticket for that game as well.
Those who are unable to attend Saturday’s makeup game will be able to exchange into one of 44 different game options. All single-game tickets can begin exchanging now. Exchanges must be made by noon on Saturday. Visit cleguardians.com/tickets for more information.
Cleveland is already scheduled for a doubleheader Monday in Detroit. The Guardians have played five doubleheaders in 2022, all at home, and are 6-4 in those games.
They have two upcoming twin bills against the White Sox at home on July 12 and in Chicago on July 23 as well as a split doubleheader at home against Minnesota on Sept. 17. Last season the club postponed six home dates and had two more road dates rescheduled because of weather.
Manager Terry Francona told reporters during his pregame availability that the forecast looked “iffy” and that Major League Baseball has already been in contact with the club about what could happen if the delay turns into a postponement.
When asked what weather app he uses, Francona demurred.
“I have no idea,” Francona said. “I’ve got an iPhone 1.”
