Texas Heatwave Will Test Power Grid Early Next Week | Top News

(Reuters) – The Texas power grid will be tested again early next week as another early spring heatwave blankets the state this weekend, prompting homes and businesses to crank up their air conditioners.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the grid for most of the state, has said it expects to have enough electricity to meet demand.

AccuWeather forecast high temperatures in Houston, the biggest city in Texas, would reach 98 degrees Fahrenheit (36.7 Celsius) on Monday before easing to the low to mid 90s F for the rest of the week. That compares with a normal high of 86 F in the city at this time of year.

Extreme weather reminds Texans of the February freeze in 2021 that left millions without power, water and heat for days during a deadly storm as ERCOT scrambled to prevent a grid collapse after an unusually large amount of generation was shut.

ERCOT projected power demand would peak at 71,152 megawatts (MW) on Monday, May 16.

That would break the grid’s current record for the month of May of 70,703 MW set earlier this week on May 9, but will remain well below the state’s all-time peak of 74,820 MW in August 2019.

One megawatt can power around 1,000 US homes on a typical day, but only about 200 homes on a hot summer day in Texas.

Next-day prices at the ERCOT North hub, which includes Dallas, jumped to a six-month high of $ 195 per megawatt hour (MWh) for Friday.

Energy traders said ERCOT North prices for Monday have traded around $ 220 per MWh.

Rangers vs Penguins: Blueshirts Back to Broadway as “Igor, Igor, Igor” Assists to Win.

Friday the 13th, on the anniversary of the Rangers clinching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2015, the Rangers headed back to Pittsburgh to attempt to stay alike another day and bring this serious back home to the Garden. The crowd not letting up at all with their chants of “IG – OR” that did seem to rattle the goalie in their last home games.

With Penguins captain Sidney Crosby out due to injury and Tyler Motte back in the lineup for the first time these playoffs, many looked at this as a glimmer of hope that the Rangers could muster enough to force a game 7. And they did just that.

1st Period

While not as bad of a start as the 5-on-3, the Rangers still seemed to move slowly and take the first penalty of the game. Losing face offs, Lindgren looking pained, and the defense not controlling the rebounds … stop me when you’ve heard this before. It was easy to fall into the same issues the Blueshirts have had all series and after a big chance by Strome in the crease, but nothing to show for it, it was the Penguins who struck first as they have so many times before.

PIT: Jeff Carter (4) – Kasperi Kapanen (3) & Marcus Pettersson (2) – 14:12

After a lot of chances in front of the net and even Shesterkin getting shoved in the crease, Carter wraps around for a rebound goal to make it 1-0.

PIT: Bryan Rust (2) – Jake Guentzel (2) – 3.48pm

Less than two minutes after Carter’s goal, Rust is able to tack on another one to make it 2-0. Guentzel did a lot of work on the assist, who has done most of the scoring for the Penguins so far during this series.

This is how the period would end, leaving everyone (myself included) holding their breath, wondering if this game would go similarly to the last one or if that period was just the beginning of the train going off the rails.

2nd Period

We would soon find out though that when the Rangers said ‘no quit’ they meant it. They came out for the second period looking like a different team than we had seen, ever before, in this series. With fight.

NYR: PP Mika Zibanejad (1) – Ryan Strome (4) & Adam Fox (3) – 5:05

Mika came out swinging on the power play, winning the face off and immediately turning it into a goal to put the Rangers on the board.

Less than two minutes later, he did it again to tie the game and make the Penguins waver just a bit. He had quite a few more chances mid-second period, leading everyone to believe a hat trick was imminent for him.

After a high sticking penalty on the Pens, Frank Vatrano left the ice as he was hit right in the face with said high stick. The call ended up being for four minutes giving the Rangers a huge power play opportunity that did pay off for them.

NYR: PP Chris Kreider (3) – Mika Zibanejad (5) & Igor Shesterkin (1) – 13:48

Yes, you read that right. Shesterkin started this play on the goal line with a heads-up pass, knowing Pittsburgh was changing lines. He gets it to Mika who gets it to Kreider who gets a power play goal to take the lead and completely turn this game on its head.

PIT: Evgeni Malkin (2) – 16:36

Malkin didn’t let the Rangers hav the lead for too long before he took it into his own hands. Unassisted, he took the puck to the net and tied the game.

This is how the third period ended and if it’s sounding familiar, it does. This is exactly how the last game at MSG went and it makes you wonder if the Rangers like heading into the third period tied.

3rd Period

Not much happened in the first half of this period but a lot of chances for the Penguins that didn’t turn into anything. With the “IG – OR” chants going, and him making the big saves, the time ticked down to under 10 minutes left in regulation before New York got any meaningful shots on goal.

NYR: Mika Zibanejad (3) – Chris Kreider (3) & Adam Fox (5) – 18:32

As the clock dwindled down, Tyler Motte got possession of the puck, passed it up to Kreider who took a chance on a shot from 50 feet out and after bouncing passed Domingue, and took the lead with less than two minutes to go.

They ultimately gave this goal to Mika Zibanejad who deflected it in by a hair, meaning he did score a hat trick in this game though it wasn’t celebrated as such in the moment.

NYR: Andrew Copp (4) – Kevin Rooney (2) & Adam Fox (6) – 19:33

The Penguins pulled the goalie, had a few chances, but Andrew Copp ultimately knocked in the empty net goal and the Rangers took a late 5-3 lead until the time ran out on the third period in Pittsburgh.

The Rangers will bring it back home for a seventh game in this series, coming back from being down three games to one.

Stephanie Beatriz (Encanto, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) will star in Peacock’s Twisted Metalthe live-action video game adaptation starring Anthony Mackie.

Alongside Mackie and showrunner Smith, executive producers also include Kitao Sakurai — who will also direct multiple episodes — Reese, Wernick, Will Arnett, and Marc Forman via their Electric Avenue production company, Jason Spire of Inspire Entertainment, Peter Principato of Artists First, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions, Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios.

The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Beatriz most recently made a splash as the voice of Mirabel in Disney’s Encanto. Prior to that, she starred in Matthew Dunster’s hit theatrical production 2:22 on London’s West End and also played Carla in the Warner Bros. film adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda’s musical In The Heights.

Beatriz is best known for playing fan-favorite Detective Rosa Diaz in the NBC comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine throughout the show’s eight-season run.

Carter Verhaeghe scores in overtime as Florida Panthers eliminated Washington Capitals in the Stanley Cup playoffs

One NHL playoff streak ended while another one just kept right on going.

Florida snapped its 26-year playoff series drought with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Washington Capitals in Game 6 Friday night. The Panthers hadn’t won a playoff series since 1996, when they appeared in a Stanley Cup Final.

“[That series win] was a long time coming, “said Jonathan Huberdeau, who notched three points in the series against Washington. Now, we might as well go all the way.”

Florida, which advanced thanks to Carter Verhaeghe’s OT game-winner, moves on now to face the winner between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round. Game 7 of that series is set for Saturday at 7 pm ET.

While Florida finally earned a playoff series victory, Washington just keeps bowing out of the playoffs early. The defeat made for four consecutive first-round exits for Washington, who haven’t advanced in the playoffs since winning a Stanley Cup in 2018.

“[It’s] a kinda f — ed up situation, “said Capitals’ captain Alex Ovechkin of the team’s dry spell.” I think you see how we played against the best team in the regular season. We have it, but we just blow it away. It is on us. It is on me, on [Nicklas Backstrom]Hon [TJ Oshie]Hon [John Carlson]. It is on everybody. “

“We basically gave the series to them,” added Backstrom.

Washington didn’t make it easy on Florida, though. The Capitals were in tough to start these playoffs, entering as an eight seed up against the reigning Presidents’ Trophy winners. Florida dominated the league offensively from the get-go and topped out at a franchise-record 122 points.

Still, the Capitals gave Florida all it could handle, taking a 2-1 series lead after Game 3.

In fact, Washington won Game 1 and Game 3 by a combined score of 10-3, pushing Florida netminder Sergei Bobrovsky to the limit and challenging Florida’s stable of high-octane forwards. In Game 5, the Capitals held a 3-0 lead too, but they let it slip away to end up with their own backs against the wall.

That was a crucial swing for the Panthers. It not only gave them back an upper hand in the series but quieted some of Washington’s burgeoning confidence ahead of what would be a decisive Game 6 in their own building.

“These things, you’ve got to go through them to really get the feel of it,” Panthers’ interim coach Andrew Brunette said of handling adversity. “You have to have heartbreaks. You find how hard it is, you understand it, and you be resilient. When you see the reward like they saw tonight, it’s all worth it.

“We took the punch, we stood up, and we started punching back.”

Washington tried its best even in Game 6 to keep Florida from moving on, scoring late to force overtime and forcing the Panthers work for the series victory.

The Capitals were on the board first in that game too, when Nic Dowd beat Bobrovsky early in the second period.

But Ryan Lomberg responded quickly for Florida, making it 2-2 heading into the third period.

The Capitals kept the pressure on, and Backstrom put them back on top less than two minutes into that final frame. Claude Giroux notched his third of the postseason for Florida to even things up midway though, and captain Aleksander Barkov scored the go-ahead goal for the Panthers late in the third.

Verhaeghe’s game-winner for Florida was his sixth goal of the postseason. He had left the game earlier with an apparent injury but returned to play hero for the Panthers. In doing so, Verhaeghe became the first NHL player to score three straight game-winning goals in the playoffs since David Krejci in 2011 and he’s the first player in Florida’s franchise history to score multiple OT playoff game-winners in a single series.

The Panthers move on now to the second round holding the inauspicious designation of the only playoff team not to have scored a power play goal. Florida went 0-for-19 against Washington with the extra man, after boasting the league’s fifth-best power play (24.4%) in the regular season.

Oscars 2023 Date Set – Deadline

The Oscars are staying in March for their 95th.

Today the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced that the 95th Annual Academy Awards will take place on Sunday March 12, 2023, which keeps the event in March for the second year in a row after this year’s show was on March 27th. The telecast will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theater at Ovation Hollywood. Nominations will be announced on January 24th, 2023.

Eligibility returns to a 12 month calendar year after two pandemic-affected frames of respectively 14 months for 2020-21, and 10 months for last year where eligibility ran March to December. For several years the show had aired in February, the last being for the 92nd Oscars February 7, 2020 just before lockdown. The 93rd Oscars aired April 25, 2021.

Tammy Sytch Ordered To Jail After Bond Revoked

Tammy Sytch will be returning to prison yet again. As announced earlier on Friday, a judge revoked the WWE Hall of Famer’s bond in regards to a March 25 accident where Sytch rear-ended another vehicle at a stoplight. She was immediately taken into custody.

This development comes only a week after Tammy Sytch was arrested for the March incident, which resulted in the death of the rear-ended vehicle, a 75-year-old man, and injuries to Sytch herself. Sytch was charged with eight DUI-related charges, most notably DUI manslaughter and a DUI while driving with a suspended license. She faces a potential of 4 to 30 years or more in prison.

Tammy Sytch was initially released on bond last Saturday afternoon; the total bond was listed at over $ 227K. She had avoided arrest before last week as police waited for her toxicology reports to come back in. The reports would eventually show Sytch having a blood alcohol level 3 1/2 times over the legal limit of operating a vehicle.

Sytch and her boyfriend James Pente, who police claim is the owner of the vehicle was driving (Sytch has claimed otherwise), have been sued by the family of the deceased, who are seeking over $ 100K in damages. No court date has been set for the civil trial. Sytch has defended both Pente and herself on social media since the incident, claiming the death was caused by a heart attack and not the accident.

Since 2012, Tammy Sytch has been arrested over 15 times (not counting this latest arrest), with several of the arrests being attributed to DUIs. Her latest arrest and response towards it have led to former WWE head trainer Bill DeMott and AEW’s Mark Henry to call for Sytch to be removed from the WWE Hall of Fame, where she was inducted in 2011. Sytch has since fired back at DeMott on social media, referring to DeMott’s checkered past working at the WWE Performance Center.

After a hearing this morning, Judge Karen Foxman revoked Tamara Sytch’s bond and she was taken back into custody. The former pro-wrestler is facing eight DUI related charges, which includes DUI manslaughter and DUI driving with suspended or revoked license. https://t.co/FKPAbSCk26
