The Nashville Predators have re-signed forward Filip Forsberg to an eight-year contract extension days before he was set to reach unrestricted free agency, the team announced on Saturday.

Forsberg’s deal carries an average annual value of $8.5 million against the NHL salary cap, a source confirmed to ESPN.

There was no word on no-trade or no-movement clauses in the contract, although Predators general manager David Poile indicated recently they were likely to be part of that new contract.

Forsberg, 27, had 84 points in 69 games last season for Nashville including a career-high 42 goals. He has spent his entire 10-year NHL career with the Predators after the Washington Capitals traded a then-prospect Forsberg to Nashville in 2013. The forward from Sweden has 469 points in 566 career games and is the franchise leader with 220 goals.

There was concern in Nashville that Forsberg could walk away as a free agent. As late as June, there was a significant gap in contract talks. But Nashville held on him through the NHL trade deadline, believing it could find some common ground in talks eventually.

Forsberg’s $8.5 million AAV makes him the highest-paid forward on the team, making slightly more annually than Matt Duchene and Ryan Johansen ($8 million each). Forsberg’s contract slots him second on the team behind captain Roman Josi, a defenseman who makes $9.059 million on average against the cap.

The Predators were the only team that could give Forsberg eight years, per the NHL’s free-agent rules.

Vince McMahon, World Wrestling Entertainment’s (WWE) longtime leader, allegedly paid out millions in hush money to a former female wrestler with whom he had a coercive sexual relationship and who was allegedly not brought back to WWE after spurning further sexual advances from the executive, according to a report published Friday in the Wall Street Journal.

McMahon allegedly paid out $7.5 million to the former wrestler, who claimed that McMahon coerced her into giving him oral sex, demoted her and then decided not to renew her contract in 2005 after she resisted further sexual encounters with him, per the Journal report. The wrestler and her lawyer reportedly negotiated a non-disclosure agreement with McMahon in 2018.

The Journal report details a total of $12 million allegedly paid out to four women over the last 16 years to quiet of the 76-year-old McMahon’s sexual misconduct.

Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported the WWE board was investigating that a secret $3 million payout from McMahon to a former employee, a paralegal, over an alleged affair. In the aftermath of that news, WWE announced McMahon would be stepping away from his duties as chairman and CEO – replaced in the interim by his daughter Stephanie – though he would maintain his role as head of creative. Sources told ESPN at the time that this was largely an optics play and McMahon was still running the company alongside WWE president Nick Khan.

In the new report Friday, the Journal cited documents and those familiar with the deals that McMahon paid the former wrestler $7.5 million for her silence. In addition, McMahon allegedly sent unsolicited naked photos of himself to a WWE contractor and sexually harassed her on the job, leading to about a $1 million non-disclosure settlement in 2008. In a 2006 agreement, a former WWE manager was paid $1 million to stay silent about McMahon initiating a sexual relationship with her.

The WWE board is continuing its investigation, which also includes that WWE executive John Laurinaitis had a sexual relationship with the same former paralegal involved with the allegedly $3 million payment, per the Journal. Laurinaitis is also being investigated for an allegedly $1.5 million non-disclosure agreement with an employee claiming sexual misconduct in 2012. Laurinaitis is reportedly currently on administrative leave.

A WWE spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment from ESPN. A company spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that WWE is cooperating with the board’s investigation, that McMahon’s relationship with paralegal was consensual and the company is taking the seriously.

The WWE board has retained the law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP to conduct the investigation, which was launched following anonymous emails being sent to directors earlier this year.

On June 27, two weeks after the first Wall Street Journal report, New York Magazine ran a story containing interviews with former WWE female referee Rita Chatterton and former WWE wrestler, Leonard Inzitari, claiming McMahon sexually assaulted Chatterton in 1986. Chatterton had previously made those claims in 1992, but this was the first time they were corroborated by a second source.

“I’ll tell you why I’m hopping on the bandwagon now,” Inzitari told writer Abraham Riesman, who is authoring the book “Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America.” “There’s worse stuff than that.”

McMahon has been in public view more than usual since the initial Journal report June 15. One day after it was published, and hours after it was announced that he’d be stepping away from his CEO and chairman duties, McMahon showed up on WWE’s ” SmackDown” program. Three days later, he appeared on “WWE Raw.” And last Saturday, McMahon was in attendance cageside at UFC 276 in Las Vegas, a rare non-WWE public appearance for pro-wrestling’s most influential man.

MILWAUKEE — The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-hander Yohan Ramirez from the Cleveland Guardians for cash and reinstated infielder Kevin Newman from the 60-day injured list on Friday.

The Pirates optioned Ramirez to Triple-A Indianapolis and had Newman in the lineup and batting seventh for their game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Newman hadn’t played since April 26 due to a left groin strain.

Ramirez, 27, has appeared in a combined eight games this season with the Seattle Mariners and Guardians. He is 1-0 with a 6.97 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. Right-handers are hitting .222 against him.

In 15 Triple-A appearances, he is 1-1 with a 6.06 ERA.

Ramirez has pitched in 49 career major league games with Seattle (2020-22) and Cleveland, going 2/3 with five saves and a 3.99 ERA.

“We really liked his stuff,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “I think there’s some things that we think mechanically we can continue to work on, but the actual stuff, we really like. The other thing is this is a guy with two options, which is really important for a club like us. We’ re fortunate to get somebody like that.”

Newman, 28, is batting .250 with no homers and eight RBI in 14 games this season. He played shortstop before getting hurt but started at second base Friday. Shelton said Newman would be used at both positions.

Last season, Newman batted .226 with five homers and 39 RBI in 148 games.

In other moves, the Pirates designated left-hander Aaron Fletcher for assignment and optioned outfielder Bligh Madris to Indianapolis.

Fletcher went 0-1 with a 6.94 ERA in nine appearances.

Five-star quarterback Dante Moore has committed to the Oregon Ducks, he announced Friday on SportsCenter.

Moore, who is ranked No. 8 overall in the 2023 ESPN 300, is the highest ranked commitment for new Ducks coach Dan Lanning and his staff. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback from Martin Luther King High School in Detroit is the No. 3 pocket-passers in the country.

“Coach Lanning is going to be a great head coach, because he knows what it takes to get to a national championship, of course being at Georgia,” Moore told ESPN. “Coach [Kenny] Dillingham as the offensive coordinator, I know I can trust in the coming years. The playmakers and the team they’re building around them will be great for me in the future.”

Despite reports of Notre Dame being the top school at one point during his recruitment, Moore continued to visit schools, including Texas A&M, LSU and Miami, to make sure he was making the best decision.

“Visiting all the schools with different facilities, different coaching staffs and meeting great coaches … and getting to talk to them is probably one of the best things to do through the whole process,” Moore told ESPN. “… There was no one I was showing favoritism to through the whole process, I was open and just enjoyed it.”

Moore, who made his final college visit to Oregon at the end of June, had already established a relationship with Dillingham, who was the offensive coordinator at Florida State prior to joining Lanning at Oregon. Moore wanted to build a better relationship with the rest of the staff and was able to do just that on his visit, as well as get a feel for the university itself.

“Getting out there and seeing the facilities, the best facilities in the country, I believe,” Moore said. “Everything is updated and [Nike founder] Phil Knight has put so much money into the university. Everything that’s at the university is going to help. People that go to Oregon get the best throughout their whole process of being there because they have every tool you need to better yourself.”

Oregon is a school many prospects are looking at for NIL deals and for networking potential beyond the college experience, and Moore understands the potential to build his brand with the Ducks.

“This whole process, many coaches and reporters know about me that, when it comes to NIL, I’m just a kid trying to play football and just better myself,” Moore said. “I know that it’s Nike and Phil Knight. Of course there can be big opportunities for NIL and build my brand. I know it’s going to be a great process, but as of now we haven’t talked anything much about that.”

The timing of Moore’s commitment comes after USC and UCLA announced they both would be leaving the Pac-12 to join the Big 10 in 2024. That leaves Oregon with questions about its future, but the uncertainty didn’t faze Moore.

“I called Coach Dillingham and asked if they were joining the Big 10, and he said they didn’t know yet,” Moore said. “Coach Lanning and all the coaches and everybody didn’t have much input on it, but if they do join them or join the Big 12 or whatever it is, I know we’ll be in a big conference for us to keep competing and be the best we could be.”

Moore has the talent and ability to come in and compete right away at Oregon. Lanning and Dillingham added Auburn transfer Bo Nix for the next two seasons. Former ESPN 300 quarterbacks Ty Thompson and Jay Butterfield are also on the roster.

Thompson and Butterfield don’t have much experience; Nix played for Dillingham at Auburn his freshman season.

“You can have multiple receivers on the field, multiple linemen,” Moore said. “But being quarterback, there’s only one of you on the field. You have to trust your quarterback coach and offensive coordinator to believe that they’ll be able to help you get to the league or help you improve yourself.

“They have multiple quarterbacks on the list, but I want to come in and compete, try to possibly get a starting job or getting to compete. You have to compete everywhere. Looking at the quarterback depth chart, that was a big part of this whole process.”

Moore was one of two ESPN 300 quarterbacks who had yet to make a commitment, leaving Dylan Lonergan (No. 62) as the lone uncommitted top-300 signal caller in the class.

MONTREAL — The Carolina Hurricanes traded defenseman Tony DeAngelo and a 2022 seventh-round draft pick to Philadelphia for a fourth-round pick (101st overall) in 2022, a third-round pick in 2023 (the lowest of Philadelphia’s three picks) and a second-round choice in 2024. The deal was announced Friday during the NHL draft.

DeAngelo, a pending restricted free agent, subsequently signed a two-year, $10 million extension with the Flyers. The blueliner has appeared in 270 NHL games to date, posting 34 goals and 157 points, and offers Philadelphia some insurance on the backend as Ryan Ellis continues to recover from a pelvic injury that cost him all but four games last season.

“We’re very happy to add Tony to our team and I know he is very excited to join the Flyers,” GM Chuck Fletcher said in a press release. “We did our due diligence and we strongly believe in Tony and his ability to help our team. He is a right-handed shot who moves the puck extremely well and will drive offense from the back end for us.”

This is the third time that DeAngelo, 26, has been traded in a career marked by controversy. Before DeAngelo was drafted 19th overall by Tampa Bay in 2014, he had been suspended twice in junior hockey, including for violating the league’s policy regarding “homophobic, racist, and sexist language” and abuse of officials.

DeAngelo was still taken by Tampa Bay but never dressed for the Lightning before being traded to Arizona in 2016 after one season with Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate Syracuse Crunch. DeAngelo made his NHL debut with the Coyotes in 2016 and skated in 39 games for the franchise prior to being traded again, to the New York Rangers, in 2017. During that time with Arizona, DeAngelo was suspended three games for physical abuse of officials. Those disciplinary issues would extend into DeAngelo’s time with New York.

The Rangers signed DeAngelo to a two-year extension in 2020. Not long after that DeAngelo displayed behavioral problems that would force New York to sever ties. In January 2021, DeAngelo had a reported altercation with Rangers’ netminder Alexander Georgiev; DeAngelo was placed on waivers right after. Former general manager Jeff Gorton clarified that was a formality, and that DeAngelo had played his final game with the team. In July, New York put DeAngelo on unconditional waivers and bought out the remainder of his contract.

DeAngelo had continued to be a polarizing figure off the ice as well, becoming regularly combative on social media over everything from the COVID-19 pandemic to US election coverage. Carolina still inked DeAngelo to a one-year deal for last season, where he registered 51 points in 64 games.

Now DeAngelo will get another fresh start in Philadelphia. He’ll play there under tough new head coach John Tortorella, who isn’t known for pulling any punches either.

Pujols, Cabrera and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron are the only players in MLB history to register 3,000 hits, 500 home runs and 600 doubles.

“I am delighted that Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera have agreed to participate in the All-Star Game,” Manfred said in a statement. “Albert and Miguel are two of the most accomplished players of their generation. They have also represented the baseball traditions of the Dominican Republic and Venezuela with excellence for the last two decades. Albert and Miguel are two all-time greats whose achievements warrant this special recognition.”

It is the 11th All-Star selection for Pujols, who is in his 22nd MLB season. The 42-year-old ranks fifth in MLB history with 683 home runs and ninth with 3,326 career hits.

“If there is one game for the fans to celebrate the history and longevity, it’s the All-Star Game,” said Chicago White Sox manager Tony LaRussa, who was Pujols’ manager in St. Louis for seven years. “Anything like that [being selected to participate in the All-Star Game]I’m all in favor of.”

Cabrera, 39, reached 3,000 career hits earlier this season. He will be appearing in his 12th All-Star Game.

The All-Star Game will be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Tuesday, July 19.
