BOSTON — The best team in baseball sure looked ordinary the last two nights at Fenway Park.

After watching his team blow a big early lead en route to a second straight ugly loss to the Red Sox, it was hard to blame Aaron Boone for getting tossed Sunday night during a 11-6 loss.

The manager was ejected by home plate umpire Tripp Gibson after Giancarlo Stanton was caught looking to end the top of the seventh.

But the Yankees’ issues ran deeper than questionable calls, as Jameson Taillon was bad again, they gave up a season-high 11 runs and their defense was abysmal.

All of it allowed Boston to come from behind to beat the Yankees on consecutive nights in front of sellout crowds, as the Red Sox scored eight unanswered runs Sunday.

It ended the Yankees’ four-city, 10-game road trip with the team going 5-5, dropping to 61-25 on the season, but with a 14-game lead over second-place Boston.

Staked twice to four-run leads, Taillon gave up six runs — as well as a season-high three homers — in five innings. It was his fourth straight subpar outing.

The Yankees got off to a fast start, as Aaron Judge singled and Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-out homer against Nick Pivetta, his 22nd homer of the season.

Pivetta walked Matt Carpenter and Aaron Hicks to lead off the second and Jose Trevino followed with an RBI single into the left-field corner, but was thrown out at second. Isiah Kiner-Falefa added an RBI single to make it 4-0.

Staked to an early four-run lead, the home run ball got Taillon again.

After giving up four homers over his last three starts, Taillon allowed a two-out, two-run shot to Franchy Cordero in the second.

Carpenter, though, hit a two-run homer in the third, giving Taillon another four-run cushion.

This time, it didn’t last.

Christian Vazquez took him deep with two outs in the third.

Following a scoreless fourth, Taillon got into trouble again in the fifth.

With two out and Jackie Bradley Jr. on third, Vazquez belted a run-scoring double.

Pitching coach Matt Blake came to the mound for a visit and JD Martinez hammered Taillon’s next pitch into the seats in right-center to bring the Red Sox all the way back.

It also continued a worrisome stretch for Taillon, who has given up 27 runs over 35 ²/₃ innings in his last seven starts for a 6.81 ERA after having a 2.30 ERA in his first 10 outings. He’s also allowed 20 earned runs in his last 21 innings.

Aroldis Chapman entered in the sixth, as the Yankees try to determine a role for the left-hander.

Trevor Story hit a high pop-up into shallow right to lead off the inning, but DJ LeMahieu, shifted towards second base, couldn’t come up with the catch and it went for a single.

After Cordero walked, former Yankee Rob Refsnyder pinch hit for Bradley and walked to load the bases.

Chapman struck out Bobby Dalbec before pinch-hitter Jeter Downs popped up a ball to shallow center, where LeMahieu flubbed it again. It went for a fielder’s choice, as Story scored the go-ahead run.

With runners on the corners, Chapman struck out Vazquez to end the 27-pitch inning and keep it a one-run game.

That didn’t last, as Kiner-Falefa made a throwing error to start the bottom of the seventh and Miguel Castro loaded the bases before giving up a three-run double to Story.

On the bright side for the Yankees is that after Monday’s off day, they’ll face last-place Cincinnati for three games — although the Reds have won four in a row.

SEATTLE (AP) — Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a throw bust through the webbing of his glove and the Seattle Mariners took advantage for their eighth straight win, beating Toronto 6-5 Sunday on two home runs by Carlos Santana.

Mariners 6, Blue Jays 5: Box score

“Baseball can be cruel sometimes when things aren’t going right,” Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said.

A day after Santana hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning for a 2-1 win, he connected for a go-ahead, two-run drive in the eighth. The Mariners are 16-3 for their best 19-game stretch since 2003.

“Everything is positive right now, so we have to keep it up,” Santana said. “The energy is great. The fan support, in the clubhouse, teammates are great. When you see that, everything is great.”

Blue Jays starter Max Castillo was pulled in the fifth with a 4-1 lead after giving up a pair of one-out singles, and reliever David Phelps walked Justin Upton to load the bases.

Sam Haggerty then grounded back to Phelps, who threw home to start what appeared to be an easy inning-ending double play. But catcher Gabriel Moreno’s throw broke through Guerrero’s first baseman’s mitt, allowing a run to score.

Guerrero kept looking in amazement as his glove while Phelps, who had begun to twirl off the mound in celebration, suddenly stopped. julio Rodriguez followed with an RBI single that cut Toronto’s lead to 4-3.

This is the second time in a month Guerrero has had trouble with his glove. He had a ball go through the webbing in a win against the Orioles on June 13.

“You know that changed the game,” Montoyo said. “I’ve seen it twice this year. Usually it doesn’t happen to the same guy and it happened to the same guy.”

Bo Bichette had a homer, two singles and drove in three runs for the Blue Jays, who were swept in the four-game series and have lost nine of their last 10.

George Springer homered on the first pitch of the game for the Blue Jays, his 17th home run of the season and his 51st career leadoff homer. Raimel Tapia also homered for Toronto.

Santana, acquired from Kansas City in late June, hit a leadoff homer in the second.

“It’s like he’s been here all year,” Seattle’s Ty France said. “He’s part of the family now and we’re happy to have him here and we’ve been rolling.”

Moreno dropped a popup by JP Crawford to begin the Seattle eighth. Santana connected off Adam Cimber (8-3) for his seventh home run this season, three for the Mariners.

The Mariners tied it at 4 on Cal Raleigh’s sacrifice fly in the sixth. Bitchette homered in the seventh.

Seattle starter Logan Gilbert allowed four runs on nine hits, both matching his season highs, in six innings.

Matt Festa (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth for the win and Paul Sewald picked up his 10th save.

SCOREBOARD WATCH

The series sweep pulled the Mariners into a tie with Toronto for the AL’s third wild-card spot. The Mariners are looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2001. ” You can’t celebrate anything. We’re not there,” said Seattle manager Scott Servais. But everybody knows the drought. It rains a lot in Seattle, so we’ve got to end the drought.”

ALL-STAR

Rodriguez was named to the All-Star team during the game. France, who was one of the two finalists for the AL first baseman spot, was not among those selected. “There’s a lot of good players, and not to take anything away from any of them, I definitely thought I played my way in there,” France said.

Phenomenal: Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez named All-Star in rookie season

ROTATING SPOTS

On Saturday, the Mariners optioned rookie starter George Kirby to Triple-A Tacoma to reduce his workload. Seattle manager Scott Servais said he expects Kirby to make one start of two or three innings at Tacoma and return to the Mariners’ rotation after the All-Star break. In his place on Wednesday at Washington, Seattle may have a bullpen day or start long reliever Tommy Milone, Servais said. Marco Gonzales will start Thursday in Texas.

UP NEXT

Blue Jays: Toronto has an off day Monday and has not announced a starter for Tuesday’s home game against Philadelphia.

Mariners: RHP Chris Flexen (5-8, 4.00 ERA) will open Seattle’s two-game series at Washington on Tuesday. Flexen has won his last three starts.

Mariners’ bullpen just got even nastier with addition of Matt Brash

How much longer does Donovan Mitchell have in Utah?

Danny Ainge gave no tells during the Utah Jazz summer league press conference on Saturday. the Jazz team president answered, maybe, three questions during the whole session, leaving most of the talking to General Manager Justin Zanik.

With the giant trade that recently took place for defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert, it’s clear the Jazz are in more of a reconstruction than an addition phase of team building. Maybe the relationship between Gobert and Donovan Mitchell was so bad that one of them had to be traded this offseason. Though, had they made the Western Conference Finals this past season, or the one before, it probably could have been managed.

Regardless, Gobert is out, as well as another starter, Royce O’Neal, so of course the heads of the Jazz front office were asked if Mitchell could be traded, or if he’s considered untouchable.

“Look, if you had asked me three months ago about anybody on the roster or any sort of change, change is inevitable in the NBA,” Manik told the media. “I’m not trying to be cryptic or anything else, but Donovan’s on our roster and he’s a very, very important part of what we’re trying to do. Things evolve in the NBA, so I couldn’t sit here and say anybody is, we’re trying to build a championship team but there’s no intent there.”

If Manik doesn’t want his response to be considered cryptic, fine, but it’s at the very least non-committal. He stopped himself from using the word “untouchable,” and he didn’t say Mitchell is a very, very important part of that roster. He said Mitchell is a “very, very important part of what we’re trying to do.”

What are the Jazz trying to do (insert Brian Windhorst meme?) It appears that they are trying to build up as much draft capital as possible, and with their roster and location it’s the only move they have. Their best chance at the NBA Finals was in 2021. They had a .722 winning percentage and home court advantage on the Los Angeles Clippers in the second round when Kawhi Leonard went down with an ACL injury. The Jazz lost the next two games and were eliminated.

They ran it back in 2022, finished the season with a five seed, a .598 winning percentage, and managed to go down 2-1 in the first round to the Dallas Mavericks sans Luka Dončić before losing that series. The Jazz have maxed out, and now it’s time to get as much value as possible for the players on their roster.

While they shouldn’t announce at a summer league press conference that they’re fielding offers for Mitchell, it’s safe to assume that between now and the Feb. 2023 trade deadline the Jazz aren’t hanging up the phone on any team inquiring about him. It would be poor management, and against everything that Ainge did with the Celtics to operate with that mindset.

When the Celtics’ 2007 draft pick wasn’t in the top two he packaged it in a trade for Ray Allen. He later traded Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce for a pirate’s booty of draft picks, and kept adding as many as he could. The Jazz received five combined first-rounders in trading for O’Neal and Gobert. It’s reasonable to believe that they could get at least three more in a trade for Mitchell.

It’s the only way for the Jazz to quickly put a container together, with the step backwards they have to take by unloading the players on their roster that currently have value. Victor Wembanyama is potentially the next European NBA star and he will likely be in next year’s draft. He is nowhere near as good as Mitchell today, but his ceiling is much higher.

The Jazz played their summer league press conference as close to the vest as possible, but don’t expect Mitchell to be on the Jazz come next summer league. Playing on a bad team will frustrate him, and there should be plenty of teams looking to acquire a three-time All-Star who is not happy in his current situation.

Trading Mitchell may not have been the Jazz’s intent on Saturday, but it’s the likely outcome in the near future.

James McCann is to the injured list for the second time this season, but Buck Showalter expects the Mets’ starting catcher to miss more than the minimum 10 days.

McCann in an oblique injury while applying a tag in the sixth inning of Saturday’s 10- win over the Marlins. He also spent more than six weeks on the IL with a fractured hand before being activated on June 25. Patrick Mazeika was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to back up Tomas Nido in Sunday’s series finale at Citi Field.

“[GM] Billy [Eppler] and I just got the information back, so I won’t get too deep, but it won’t just be the DL period,” Buck Showalter said. “It’ll be longer than 10 days. Obviously for the team, too, but I’m disappointed for him.

“The trainers were talking about it. I don’t know if they’ve ever had anybody work harder to get back from the hamate [injury]. I know Mac was really disappointed [Saturday] night, wanted to get some different news. But it’s the nature of what these guys do for a living. It’s very demanding and sometimes the body doesn’t cooperate or there’s a play that puts you in harm’s way.”

The Mets still were waiting on MRI results for outfielder Starling Marte, who also departed Saturday’s game in the fourth inning with left groin tightness.

Marte, a potential All-star selection for the Mets when reserves are announced later Sunday, is slashing .380/.436/.600 over his last 13 games to raise his overall average to .291 with an OPS of .803. Kramer Robertson was in the clubhouse before the game ready to be activated if it was determined that Marte also required an IL stint.

Nick Kyrgios is going to play in the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career.

The Australian athlete, 27, advanced via walkover after Rafael Nadal withdrew from their scheduled Friday semifinal due to injury. The recent series of events follows a dramatic week for Kyrgios, who has been accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Chiara Passari.

Amid the recent controversy, Kyrgios has been leaning on his current girlfriend, Costen Hatzi.

A Sydney-based blogger and influencer, Hatzi has been dating Kyrgios for several months, with the couple going public with their romance in December 2021. She has joined him on the road for various tournaments this year, including Wimbledon.

On Wednesday, one day after News.com.au reported that Kyrgios has been charged with assault, Hatzi attended a practice session with the controversial athlete, who wasn’t shy about packing on the PDA. Later in the day, she cheered him on at the All England Club, where he defeated Chile’s Cristian Garin to advance to the semifinals.

“Semi finals of Wimbledon,” Hatzi gushed in an Instagram Story. “So proud of you @kingkyrgios.”

“I am in love with her and she is an amazing person,” Kyrgios said. “We go through ups and downs together but I love her to bits.”

Prior to his relationship with Hatzi, Kyrgios began dating Passari in July 2020. The two split up last October after an argument that resulted in a police visit to their Adelaide hotel.

Kyrgios, who is ranked No. 40 in the world, is due in a Canberra, Australia court next month. The common assault charge has a maximum sentence of two years in jail.

SEATTLE (AP) — Carlos Santana provided the jolt to back up another terrific night of pitching and kept Seattle on the kind of roll not seen from the Mariners in nearly two decades.

Mariners 2, Blue Jays 1: Box score

Santana hit his first home run since being acquired by Seattle, lining a two-run shot off Toronto starter Alek Manoah that lifted the Mariners to a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday night.

Seattle won its seventh straight and has taken 15 of its past 18. The 15-3 run is the best 18-game stretch by the Mariners since May 16-June 5, 2003.

“When fans are there, when it’s loud every single pitch, when everybody’s hanging on every single pitch it’s fun to play baseball,” Seattle starter Robbie Ray said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Santana’s homer came in the seventh inning after Seattle had managed just one hit off Manoah through the first six. JP Crawford led off the seventh with a single and Santana ambushed a fastball in the middle of the plate for his fifth home of the season and his biggest hit to date with the Mariners.

“(Manoah) was pitching great. We needed him to make a mistake, and we need to take advantage of it and we did,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said.

Santana was acquired in late June from Kansas City for a pair of pitchers.

“The energy is great,” said Santana. “We have to keep it up. It’s a long season.”

Ray faced his former team for the first time and threw six innings, allowing just three hits and one run on George Springer’s 16th home run of the season leading off the sixth inning. Ray won the AL Cy Young Award last season with the Blue Jays, but did not travel to Toronto when the teams met in May due to border restrictions related to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Ray struck out six and pitched out of a major jam in the fifth inning when Toronto loaded the bases with no outs and failed to score. Over his past six starts, Ray has a 0.91 ERA with 11 walks and 46 strikeouts.

“That pitching staff over there, that bullpen and the way they’re pitching, you got to give them credit too. They haven’t allowed that many runs in the last 20 something games and they’re hot,” Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said. “They’re playing good baseball and they had Robbie Ray on the mound today. We’ve seen that before.”

Matt Brash (2-3) struck out a pair as part of a perfect seventh inning, including a 13-pitch strikeout of Lordes Gurriel Jr. that included nine foul balls.

Pitching for the third straight day, Diego Castillo faced trouble in the ninth after one-out singles by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk. Castillo got groundouts from Teoscar Hernández and Matt Chapman for his fifth save.

Manoah (9-4) was the equal of Ray, pitching 7 1/3 innings but took the loss. Manoah didn’t allow a hit until Ty France’s one-out double in the fourth and allowed three baserunners total until the problems in the seventh.

Manoah struck out seven and walked four.

“It’s a pleasure to manage him. I’m telling you because when you take the mound, he gave you all he had (and) saved the bullpen for tomorrow,” Montoyo said.

SPRINGER DINGER

All of Toronto’s offense came from the one swing by Springer. It was his 23rd career home run against Seattle. He’s hit 13 of the 23 at T-Mobile Park.

ROSTER MOVES

Seattle made a flurry of moves to reinforce its bullpen, recalling Brash and Matt Festa from Triple-A Tacoma. RHP Ken Giles was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation and RHP Erik Swanson was placed on the paternity list.

Seattle also optioned rookie starting pitcher George Kirby to Tacoma. With an off day on Monday and the looming All-Star break, it’s an easy way for Seattle to manage Kirby’s innings. Right-hander Jacob Barnes was selected from Tacoma to take Kirby’s spot.

Catcher Luis Torrens (shoulder) was also activated from the 10-day IL and C Andrew Knapp was designated for assignment.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Blue Jays: Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo was not ready to name a starter for Sunday’s series finale but it won’t be RHP Kevin Gausman. Montoyo said Gausman would not return to the rotation until Tuesday at the earliest. Gausman was hit on the ankle in his last start and was scratched from his scheduled turn on Thursday.

UP NEXT

Blue Jays: Toronto is expected to make it a bullpen day and announce a starter on Sunday.

Mariners: RHP Logan Gilbert (10-3, 2.61) looks to join Houston’s Justin Verlander as the only 11-game winners in the American League. Gilbert allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings in his last start against San Diego. Gilbert has pitched at least five innings in every start this season.

NEW YORK (AP) — The longtime World Wrestling Entertainment impresario Vince McMahon agreed to share more than $12 million over the past 16 years to suppress of sexual misconduct and infidelity, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The amount is significantly larger than what was previously known.

Four women — all formerly affiliated with WWE — signed agreements with McMahon, 76, that bar them from discussing their relationships with him, the Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the deals and documents it reviewed.

McMahon stepped down as CEO and chairman of WWE in mid-June during an investigation into the alleged misconduct and the Journal reported at the time that he had agreed to pay $3 million to a former paralegal who said he sexually harassed her on the job.

McMahon will continue to oversee WWE’s creative content during the investigation.

WWE named McMahon’s daughter, Stephanie, interim CEO and chairwoman during the investigation into his alleged misconduct though he continued to oversee the company’s creative side. The organization stated at the time that it will have no further comment until the investigation is over.

McMahon has been the leader and most recognizable face at WWE for decades. When he purchased what was then the World Wrestling Federation, from his father in 1982, wrestling matches took place at small venues and appeared on local cable channels.

WWE matches are now held in professional sports stadiums and the organization has a sizeable overseas following. It has a broadcast partnership with the Saudi media company MBC Group.

The organization underwent a seismic transformation under McMahon with events like WrestleMania, a premium live production that draws millions of fervent viewers.

Revenue last year exceeded $1 billion for the first time and the company has television deals with Fox and NBCUniversal. Last month it announced a multiyear expansion of its original programming partnership with A&E.

WWE stars have become crossover sensations, including Hulk Hogan, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and John Cena.

Shares of World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., based in Stamford, Connecticut, dropped 2% on Friday.

Former Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle Duane Brown was arrested with a gun at LAX airport.

airport officials confirmed to ABC News that the 6’4”, 300-plus pound free-agent lineman allegedly had a concealed gun on him while going through security screening at Terminal 6.

Brown, a five-time Pro-Bowler, who dubbed “one of the best left tackles in the game,” by former teammate Russell Wilson, was busted around 2 pm after he tried to go through the security checkpoint with a gun in his luggage , according to TMZ Sports, which first reported the arrest.

The gun wasn’t loaded, sources told the outlet.

Photos show Brown, 36, being escorted out of the airport by police in handcuffs.

He is reportedly being charged with possession of a concealed firearm, according to TMZ.

Brown, a Virginia Tech alum, spent his first 10 seasons with the Houston Texans before playing the last five with the Seahawks. He became a free agent after the last season, during which he made the Pro Bowl.

BOSTON — For one night, at least, the Red Sox returned some drama to the AL East.

The Yankees were four outs away from extending their lead in the division and sending Boston to a fifth straight loss, but the Red Sox ended up with a 6-5, 10-inning victory.

Clay Holmes allowed an RBI single to Alex Verdugo to tie the score at 3-3 in the eighth. Then, after the Yankees scored twice in the top of the 10th, Verdugo won it with a two-run single off Wandy Peralta in the bottom of the inning, as the Red Sox stunned the Yankees in front of another sold-out crowd at Fenway Park.

The drama was caused by a rare hiccup by the Yankees’ bullpen, as Holmes blew a save for just the second time this season. He came in with a runner on second and two outs in the eighth, but gave up the run-scoring single to Verdugo.

Holmes rebounded with a perfect ninth, aided by a terrific diving play by Josh Donaldson at third on a hard grounder by Jarren Duran to end the inning.

Aaron Judge led off the 10th against left-hander Jake Diekman and drilled a double to drive in automatic runner Jose Trevino.

Anthony Rizzo — back in the lineup after missing four games due to back stiffness — followed with his second RBI double of the night to make it 5-3. He was then thrown out trying to steal third.

Peralta came on for the bottom of the inning and allowed an RBI single to Jeter Downs before Xander Bogaerts grounded out for the second out if the inning. That brought up Verdugo, who singled to right to end it.

After scoring 34 runs over their previous three games, the Yankees’ offense was mostly held down.

Michael King got Trevor Story to fly out to left with two on and two out to end the sixth, with the Yankees up by a run.

The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead when Jordan Montgomery gave up an RBI single to Bobby Dalbec in the second inning.

Facing Kutter Crawford, the fourth straight rookie to start for the reeling Red Sox, the Yankees had just a pair of singles by Judge and Matt Carpenter until Aaron Hicks led off the fifth with a homer to tie the score at 1-1.

With one out in the fifth, Kyle Higashioka singled, but inexplicably tried to steal second with Judge at the plate. Higashioka was thrown out for the second out before Judge whiffed to end the inning.

But the Yankees pounced on Ryan Brasier, who replaced Crawford to start the sixth.

Gleyber Torres, in the midst of a hot streak, led off with a single and Rizzo hit a shot into the gap in right-center.

Duran, the Boston center fielder, made a feeble diving attempt at the ball, which got by him and allowed Torres to score easily from first to put the Yankees up by a run.

After Giancarlo Stanton struck out, Donaldson’s two-out single to center scored Rizzo to make it 3-1.

Montgomery at one point retired eight straight and didn’t allow a hit after Dalbec’s run-scoring single until former Yankee Rob Refsnyder hit his first pitch of the bottom of the sixth over the Green Monster. The 436-foot blast cut the Yankees’ lead to 3-2.

The lefty was yanked after he gave up back-to-back singles with two out and King came on to retire Story.

With two outs in the eighth, King allowed a double to JD Martinez and manager Aaron Boone went to Holmes, who walked Xander Bogaerts and then gave up the single to Verdugo.

The Mets unveiled Keith Hernandez’s “17” plaque above Citi Field, but the former first baseman’s number wasn’t the only thing that got retired Saturday.

Less celebrated by the sellout crowd of 43,336 was the retirement of the Mets’ bats for nine innings, before a dose of ugly-ball by the Marlins interjected in the 10th.

“There were a lot of weird things that happened during that game,” Brandon Nimmo said after pitcher Tan Scott bungled his comebacker, allowing the Mets to score the winning run in a 5-4, 10-inning victory. “To win that way, I guess is how the game was going.”

The victory was the Mets’ first on an error with two outs in extra innings since Game 6 of the 1986 World Series against the Red Sox, according to the team. Hernandez, of course, played in that game.

The Mets, who managed just five hits and trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the 10th inning, appeared cooked on this day after Luis Guillorme struck out for the second out, with automatic runner Mark Canha still at second base. But Tomas Nido hit a grounder that rolled under third baseman Brian Anderson’s glove for an RBI double that tied the score.

Nimmo followed with a chopper to the mound. Scott dropped the ball, then threw it away, bringing in Nido and allowing the Mets to escape after Starling Marte and James McCann both exited the game early with injuries.

Marte departed in the fourth inning with left-groin tightness, according to the Mets. McCann departed in the sixth with left side tightness after he tagged Jesus Sanchez out at the plate; he was replaced at catcher by Nido. Both Marte and McCann will receive imaging and will be evaluated Sunday.

“You really want to figure out a way to win a game on Keith’s day, so the baseball gods shined on us,” manager Buck Showalter said.

Nido was involved in a key play in the top of the 10th that helped the Mets minimize the damage after Francisco Lindor’s errant throw had allowed Billy Hamilton to score the go-ahead run.

Jon Berti had reached second base after Lindor threw to third on Berti’s grounder in the hole in an attempt to nail Hamilton, but misfired. Berti, however, was picked off second base by Nido for the first out.

“I feel like in the minors were always taught to throw the ball; you never know what can happen at the other end of the ball,” Nido said. “That was one of those situations when I picked it [in the dirt] I knew guys are usually going one step going in the direction to the next base. Even though he was able to get back, giving Lindor a chance to make a tag and make something happen, that is what it’s about.”

Adam Ottavino surrendered a leadoff homer to Jesus Aguilar in the eighth inning that tied the score 3-3. it was a second straight Ottavino letdown against the Marlins; the right-hander allowed a walkoff homer to Nick Fortes on June 26 in Miami, costing the Mets an opportunity at a three-game sweep. On Saturday, Ottavino worked ahead 0-2 in the count to Aguilar before hanging a slider that disappeared over the left-field fence.

Lindor delivered a two-run homer in the sixth against Braxton Garrett that gave the Mets a 3-2 lead. The blast, off the left-field foul pole, was Lindor’s fifth in 10 games against the Marlins this season and his 15th overall. Lindor stood at home plate trying to finesse the ball fair as it left his bat.

The Mets didn’t get their first hit until the fourth inning, when Pete Alonso smashed a two-out solo homer. The home run was Alonso’s first since June 25 and gave him 23 for the season. Alonso snapped a 10-game streak without an RBI and increased his MLB lead to 70.

Anderson’s RBI double off Carlos Carrasco with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth tied the score 1-1, but Guillorme’s strong relay throw to the plate helped limit the damage in the inning. Guillorme gloved Nimmo’s throw and in one motion fired to McCann, who tagged out Sanchez.

McCann departed the game during the pitching change that brought in reliever Seth Lugo, after grabbing his left side. Avisail Garcia later scored on a wild pitch by Lugo for a 3-2 Miami lead.

“Probably the best play of the game was Guillorme’s throw,” Showalter said. “That’s one where you never ask for a refund on that, just seeing that go on. He’s something. He’s always anticipatory.

“There were so many plays over the course of that game. Very seldom do you get outhit and make more errors [and win]”
