Tom Felton found himself a far way from Hogwarts when a stranger asked him a question that would change his life forever.

The actor, now 36, recalls in his book “Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard” (Grand Central Publishing, 288 pp., out now) how he wandered away from his rehabilitation facility in Malibu, California one night in an attempt to trek several miles to a bar he frequented in West Hollywood.

Along the way, Felton, in tattered clothes and in denial of his alcoholism, walked into a gas station, where an elderly man behind the counter gave him $20, a bottle of water and a simple but profound question to ponder: “Are you a rich man?”

The immediate answer was obvious. At 13, Felton scored the role of Draco Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” films, solidifying his place in pop culture. Toys are modeled after him. Children around the world dress as him for Halloween. Of course he’s a rich man.
