Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar traveled to Barcelona this week. Monday was the start date for the ‘Neymar 2’ trial, where the Brazilian, among multiple football personalities, is facing accusations of private corruption and attempted fraud relating to his transfer from Santos to Barcelona in 2013.

The Brazilian company DIS owned 40 per cent of Neymar’s rights in 2013. It claims the footballer’s camp, Barcelona and Santos orchestrated a network of unofficial payments to hide the final price, and eventually cut its share out of the transfer to Spain.

Claims from DIS have been investigated by the Spanish prosecutor’s office, who brought to the dock of Barcelona’s provincial court a renowned list of suspects: Neymar, his parents Neymar da Silva and Nadine Goncalves, former Barcelona presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, as well as former Santos president Odilio Rodrigues.

All the defendants have denied any wrongdoing.

What happened with Neymar’s signing for Barcelona?

In 2011, Barcelona president Rosell reached an agreement with Neymar’s camp for the player to join the club in 2014 — when his contract at Santos was expiring.

This agreement involved the payment of €40million (£34.7m, $39.4m) to the footballer’s family, with €10m of that deposited in advance. Had the move to Barcelona not been completed, Neymar’s camp would have had to pay a compensatory fine to Barcelona valued at €50m.

The club’s board decided to proceed with the signing one year earlier than had originally been planned. In 2013, Santos and Barcelona agreed a €17m fee for the transfer of Neymar. DIS, as owners of 40 per cent of the star’s rights, received €6.8m.
