Andrew Wiggins wasn’t exactly sure what to wear to his first Ring Night. He was inclined to keep it chill, like normal, but this occasion he begged for something snazzier. A shiny green suit wasn’t his style. But how should he fashion himself for this career moment? He stood in his closet, poring through his options.

In the end, he chose a stone gray Prada t-shirt and black jeans, and black leather shoes with white sneaker soles. It was simple and comfortable. It was a kind of elegance visible to those who know. It was him. The grandeur in the moment, for him, is that he didn’t have to be so grand. For Wiggins, his championship swagger is liberty. To be authentic to his personality. To not have to chase clout, to not have to prove himself. To not have to answer critics. To not have to play a part.

And that’s kind of the beauty of Wiggins, and the Warriors, and how this relationship has blossomed. Why it has worked so well. Why this team, this city, this culture has become his new home. Who he is, that’s embraced. All he is, and even what he’s not, that’s understood. What he does, that’s maximized. He’s so sure of it, he signed a four-year contract extension for $109 million — an average salary ($27.3 million) significantly less than what he’s making now ($33.6 million).

“It’s just a place that gives me peace,” he said. “A place that gives me peace. Where I can be myself. I feel like here — you know, some people will say like, ‘We’re all just one big family.’ But they don’t really say that here.
