Two new PS5 games have caused a bit of an uproar this week. A Plague Tale: Requiem and Gotham Knights committed the ultimate sin of not reaching 60 frames-per-second on Sony’s current-gen console. As far as we’re concerned, both are good games — Requiem being a genuine treat, as per our review — but that hasn’t stopped people from sparking up the old frame rate debate.

The reality of the situation is that we’re now quite used to having a 60 frames-per-second performance mode on PS5 for most titles. This allows the action to flow much more smoothly than what we had grown accustomed to in previous generations, when console games were, generally speaking, being capped at 30fps.

Action and fighting game fans will tell you just how important a high and consistent frame rate is. 60fps doesn’t just look smoother — it allows for more responsive gameplay, as animations can be better read, and button inputs can be registered with greater ease.

But with A Plague Tale: Requiem and Gotham Knights skipping last-gen machines like the PS4, it’s making people wonder whether this is a sign of what’s to come on PS5. Are we already moving away from 60fps on consoles?

Honestly, we’re not convinced either way. What a lot of onlookers are missing here is that both A Plague Tale: Requiem and Gotham Knights are poorly optimized releases — they have issues across all platforms, including PC, where even high-end rigs are struggling to run them smoothly. It’s little more than a coincidence that they’ve launched around the same time, and that they’re now making PS5 users ponder whether their system will continue to offer higher frame rate modes in the future.

But as always, this topic begs the question: do you actually care about having 60fps on PS5? Vote in our poll, and then try to be reasonable in the comments section below.
