After Jorginho converted from 12 yards to put Chelsea 1-0 up, Erik ten Hag called Bruno Fernandes to the touchline. Manchester United’s manager put one hand on his player’s shoulder and with the other gesticulated from right to left, defense to attack.

The conversation lasted six seconds and at the end of it, Fernandes ran to Luke Shaw and then Diogo Dalot to convey the instructions. Ten Hag, it appeared clear, wanted his full-backs to get forward and wide to deliver balls into the box.

Seven minutes later, Casemiro rose to summon a magnificent header to Shaw’s cross, moments after Chelsea had cleared a low center by Dalot from the opposite flank.

Getting the ball in the mixer is hardly a revolutionary concept — and had Kepa Arrizabalaga laid a firmer glove, Ten Hag’s intervention would have been a footnote. Whatever the ultimate outcome, though, the point remains that the Dutchman has clear ideas and transmits them in a clinical manner.

He was a persistent presence on the touchline in the 1-1 draw at Chelsea, effectively coaching his players through the game. The product of training sessions at Carrington is becoming increasingly apparent in matches and the 90 minutes themselves are providing further opportunities to imbed strategies.

Often, despite United controlling large periods of the game and maintaining 52 per cent possession overall, Ten Hag was angered by what he saw.

When Victor Lindelof drove a pass from back to front for Marcus Rashford to chase — a combination that has created goals before — Ten Hag animatedly expressed his frustration. Chelsea gained the ball and even though United turned over possession again with good pressing, leading to a Fernandes shot, Ten Hag seemed to demand that moves be constructed through midfield rather than go direct. (United had dominated the center of the pitch in the first half, in part due to their numerical advantage, before Graham Potter made a substitution and switched formations.)
