CLEVELAND, Ohio — Six months. That’s how long it had been since the Cleveland Cavaliers played a meaningful game inside Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. It was worth the wait.

suspense Drama. agony frustration glee. Sunday’s game had it all. It was equally thrilling and bewildering. When it was finally over, the Cavs had a hard-fought 117-107 overtime win against the Washington Wizards.

For the second consecutive game, the Cavs slogged through another sleepy start before settling in. Maybe they were overamped being in front of the frisky hometown crowd. Perhaps it was heavy legs, playing the second night of a back-to-back following a time zone change. Could’ve been a bit of both.

Whatever the reason, it was hardly the beginning anyone wanted, especially Cavs coach JB Bickerstaff, who picked up a frustration technical foul less than four minutes into the game.

The Cavs were down 8-0 after just two minutes. They were down double digits at the 7:40 mark of the first quarter. But just like one night earlier in Chicago, the young Cavs followed their new leader — Donovan Mitchell, who redeemed himself after a couple late-game lackadaisical blunders that nearly soured Mitchell’s otherwise shimmering home debut.

“I’m more poised than that. That shouldn’t happen,” Mitchell said. “We should have been home an hour ago. That’s really where my head is at. We’ll take the win, but I promise you for the next day and a half all I’m going to be thinking about is finding ways to execute late game and being the best for my team and I wasn’t. I’m better than that and I will be better than that.”

In the final 40 seconds, Mitchell turned the ball over twice, both of which led to Wizards buckets and tied the game at 103. Mad at the lack of a foul call on a previous floater and himself for the uncharacteristic carelessness, a despondent Mitchell pounded the padded scorer’s table.

Then he had a shot at redemption.
