But a few details have emerged: It will be his last album with his label Top Dawg Entertainment, it will come with new, mysterious alter ego Oklama, and the album&#8217;s first single, &#8220;The Heart Part 5,&#8221; falls in line with the timely and poignant messaging of his old hits as he takes on the identities of Will Smith, OJ Simpson and more. <\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I feel joy to have been a part of such a cultural imprint,&#8221; Lamar posted on his website in August, referencing Top Dawg and using the Oklama pseudonym.  &#8220;May the Most High continue to use Top Dawg as a vessel for candid creators. As I continue to pursue my life&#8217;s calling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">Halftime show review:<\/strong>Eminem, Mary J. Dot or King Kendrick or Kung Fu Kenny has up his sleeve for his next era of music, or his &#8220;life&#8217;s calling,&#8221; but until then, they can only lean on what Lamar, 34, has previously released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Here&#8217;s a look at the projects that made the rapper a 14-time Grammy winner: <\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Kendrick Lamar presented &#8216;Section .80&#8217; as his &#8216;warm-up&#8217; lyrical diary <\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Lamar&#8217;s debut came on the heels of several widely circulated mixtapes, releasing 2011&#8217;s &#8220;Section .80&#8221; as a well-received iTunes exclusive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The jazzy, yet punk rock album, which ran just under an hour, mostly relied on Lamar and his thoughts on his Compton environment. The young teen who was once K.Dot reintroduces himself as a fully realized 25-year-old star: &#8220;King Kendrick Lamar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The title was sealed when he entered the Grammy Awards with seven nominations that year, including album of the year and best new artist. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I knew that some day I would be in this position, and I wanted to tell different stories of coming from the inner city,&#8221; Lamar told USA TODAY in 2012 of &#8220;Good Kid.&#8221;  &#8220;Especially about young kids trying their best to stay away from the gang experience.&#8221; <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">&#8216;To Pimp A Butterfly&#8217; solidifies Kendrick Lamar&#8217;s socially aware songwriting <\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">After a few years of silence from Lamar, he returned with a surprise Funkadelic-influenced jazz and soul album that solidified the rapper&#8217;s socially conscious style with themes of temptation, fame, colorism and incarceration within the Black community. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:373px\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/8dad3e36f3e9c4602d539c3ca56b3f9d9722b876\/c=133-511-1411-1233\/local\/-\/media\/2015\/03\/16\/USATODAY\/USATODAY\/635621187846228871-LAMAR-PIMP-BUTTERFLY-MUS-jy-4872-.JPG?ssl=1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly' opened in the top spot on the Billboard 200 album chart.\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The album cover features shirtless Black men and young boys flexing chains and stacks of money in front of the White House while stepping on top of a white politician (who might be Ronald Reagan, referred to often in the rapper&#8217;s earlier songs about the demise of the &#8217;80s).<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Laced throughout the album are pieces of poetry that describe Lamar&#8217;s &#8220;survivor&#8217;s remorse&#8221; for leaving Compton. The first song, &#8220;Blood,&#8221; ends with Lamar being shot. <\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">Kendrick Lamar&#8217;s &#8216;DAMN.&#8217;:<\/strong>A track-by-track instant review<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In &#8220;DAMN.,&#8221; Lamar also introduces a new ego for himself: Kung Fu Kenny, who he told Complex was &#8220;a master of the craft&#8221; of songwriting and music in 2017. <\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Not only did &#8220;DAMN.&#8221;  win five Grammys, it earned a 2018 Pulitzer Prize for being &#8220;a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism\u2026 capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;DAMN.&#8221;  closes with &#8220;Duckworth.,&#8221; which tells a true story of how Top Dawg Entertainment&#8217;s CEO once planned to rob a KFC where Lamar&#8217;s father worked and decided to spare his life of him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Lamar raps at the end before a gunshot sounds off: &#8220;Because if Anthony (Tiffith) killed Ducky (Kenny Duckworth), Top Dawg could be servin &#8216;life, while I grew up without a father and die in a gunfight.&#8221; <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Could &#8216;Mr.  Morale &#8216;allow Lamar life after fictional death?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Leaving the last record with the idea of \u200b\u200bLamar dying makes space for &#8220;Mr. Morale&#8221; to be picked up in the afterlife.  Lamar writes from an otherworldly place, hinting toward completion and separation from the rest of the world as a heavenly body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts. I&#8217;ve prayed for you all,&#8221; Lamar wrote on his Oklama website.  &#8220;See you soon enough.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">On the &#8220;Mr. Morale&#8221; album cover, Lamar wears a Jesus-like crown of thorns, with a baby in his arms and a handgun in his waistband.
