“Can you print it?” — Ara Parseghian when asked about the USC horse “Traveler”

Outside of the Navy game, the game I enjoy looking forward to most is the “greatest intersectional rivalry” in college football – Notre Dame vs. USC.

Although I prefer the game to be played at Notre Dame Stadium, as opposed to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, due to my still being traumatized by childhood memories, from 1972 and 1974, of Trojan running back Anthony Davis’ touchdown dance on his knees in the end zone.

Yes, history has nothing to do with the playing of the game each year, but stories do add to the rivalry’s legacy and lore.

How many of you remember or have heard of Ara’s pep rally speech in 1973?

Ara hated the USC horse “Traveler” and fired up Notre Dame students at the Stepan Center when he brought out a white horse and said, “We stole the mascot” and the place went crazy.

Perhaps we need a little bit more “psychological warfare” today to fire up the fan base and add to the game’s storyline.

USC enters Saturday’s game ranked #5th in the AP Top 25 poll with a record of 10-1 and has a little bit of a swagger after defeating cross-town rival UCLA 48-45, while #13th-ranked Notre Dame has the opportunity to return the favor (remembering history and 1964) of knocking the Trojans out of the national championship conversation with a little “Irish” luck.

Prediction

Notre Dame wins the coin toss and defers to control the second half clock, and with a sound running game and a “stingy” Irish defense, the Irish shuts down the “high octane” Trojan offense to win 28-17 to finish the season at 9-3.
