Tennessee has a defense ranked 100th nationally heading into the final Saturday of the regular season and Josh Heupel and this Vols staff don’t plan on running out one of the worst defensive units in college football much longer.

Friday afternoon they took another big step forward regarding the potential on this side of the football, beating out Alabama and Georgia for Top247 defensive lineman David Hobbs.

The 6-foot-4, 277-pound Hobbs is one of the most talented players at the point of attack in the country, tabbed by the Top247 as the No. 1 recruit in the state of North Carolina and No. 5 defensive lineman in the country. He is a big, athletic difference-maker who has all the traits to be one of the SECs best defensive linemen for the years to come.

Hobbs shines on both sides of the ball on the prep level for Concord (NC) Jay M Robinson. He’s a plus grade in every category from twitch, to power, to change of direction ability, and he can play in space and run. He can stunt, he can rush the passer, he can control the line of scrimmage, and as Tennessee aims to take the next step as a program in becoming a consistent National Title contender, landing guys like Hobbs and beating out the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide for coveted defensive linemen is what you have to do.

When you look at a Tennessee class that ranks No. 11 nationally per the 247Sports Composite, Hobbs and Tyree Weathersby are going to be a really good duo for the Vols on an evolving defensive line. The pass rushers and speed on the edge is really coming together with the likes of James Pearce and Joshua Josephs last cycle and Chandavian Bradley and Caleb Herring in this class, and Hobbs is the one with a skillset to take everyone to another level. Trevor Duncan and Nathan Robinson are exciting big-body types as well as this is a group that should have plenty of depth and versatility.

Hobbs will play in the All-American Bowl in January and is one of the top two biggest recruiting wins of the Heupel era alongside five-star quarterback Nicholas Iamaleava.
