Actress and singer Irene Cara, an Oscar and Grammy winner best known for the theme songs of \u201cFame\u201d and \u201cFlashdance\u201d in the early ’80s, has died, her publicist said. She was 63.\n <\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPlease share your thoughts and memories of Irene,\u201d Judith Moose said in a tweet<\/a> announcing the singer’s death. \u201cI’ll be reading each and every one of them and know she’ll be smiling from Heaven. She adored her fans.\n <\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n

Cara died in her Florida home. The cause of death is unknown, according to Moose’s statement.\n <\/p>\n

\n

As a youth, Cara appeared on TV’s \u201cElectric Company\u201d before acting as a teen in the movies \u201cAaron Loves Angela\u201d and \u201cSparkle.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n

Her breakthrough came as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 musical \u201cFame,\u201d about New York’s High School for the Performing Arts. She had a hit record with that movie’s title song, and another with the ballad \u201cOut Here on My Own.\u201d She was nominated for a Golden Globe and two Grammys that year.\n <\/p>\n

Three years later, Cara co-wrote the lyrics for \u201cFlashdance\u2026 What a Feeling,\u201d another radio smash for which she received an Oscar for Best Original Song and a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.\n <\/p>\n

She had a few other hits, including \u201cWhy Me\u201d and \u201cBreakdance.\u201d She also acted in movies such as \u201cCity Heat\u201d with Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood, \u201cDC Cab\u201d with Mr. T and \u201cCertain Fury\u201d with Tatum O’Neal.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
