Mariah Carey admits her obsession with Christmas stems from her tough childhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you grow up with a messed-up life and then you’re able to have this transformation where you can make your life what you want it to be? That is joy for me,\u201d the \u201cAll I Want for Christmas Is You\u201d singer, 52, told W magazine on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s why I want my kids to have everything they can have. I want them to be able to understand that they can be anything they want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carey added that she knows people tend to look at her as \u201cso festive\u201d or the \u201cChristmas girl,\u201d but she said she’s taken on the role because the holiday truly makes her \u201chappy\u201d \u2014 which she didn’t always feel growing up .<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople think I had this princess-style life or whatever, a kind of fairy-tale existence where I just emerged, like, ‘Here I am!’ And that is not what it is,\u201d the \u201cFantasy\u201d singer explained.<\/p>\n

Carey wrote in-depth in a 2020 memoir, \u201cThe Meaning of Mariah Carey,\u201d about her violent upbringing.<\/p>\n

The Grammy winner claimed in the book how her \u201cbroken\u201d big brother, Morgan Carey, was allegedly so \u201cabusive\u201d that she once called the cops on him for trying to hurt their mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cChoking in tears, I did my best to calmly tell her, ‘My brother really hurt my mother, and I’m home alone. Please come help,’\u201d she wrote. \u201cOne of the cops, looking down at me but speaking to another cop beside him, said, ‘If this kid makes it, it’ll be a miracle.’ And that night, I became less of a kid and more of a miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mariah also alleged in her memoir that her older sister, Alison Carey, drugged her with a whole Valium when she was only 12 and left her with one of her sister’s boyfriends, who was allegedly packing a pistol on a creepy car ride.<\/p>\n

In her interview with W, the \u201cHero\u201d singer also opened up about feeling \u201cothered\u201d as a biracial kid growing in the predominately white Long Island neighborhood of Huntington.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were no role models for people who were clearly mixed or, you know, light-skinned or whatever we were categorizing it as then, so I didn’t know who to look up to when I was growing up,\u201d Mariah said. \u201cIt was difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the \u201cAlways Be My Baby\u201d singer showcased her love for Christmas on a national stage by performing her Christmas classic at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade alongside her two children, Moroccan and Monroe.<\/p>\n

She will also be putting on a holiday show at Madison Square Garden next month.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
