Penn State appears to be in good position to clinch a berth in a New Year’s Six bowl after it won its 10th game Saturday and got some help with higher ranked teams falling across a busy day of college football.

Below, we’re going to round up where analysts and pundits have Penn State going in late December or early January. This post was originally published Sunday afternoon, and it will be updated Sunday evening across Monday as more projections are released by various outlets.

Penn State hasn’t played in the New Year’s Six since after its last 10-win season in 2019. The Nittany Lions beat Memphis in the Cotton Bowl — a popular destination in this week’s projections.

After Saturday’s 35-16 win over Michigan State, Penn State coach James Franklin was asked about the importance of returning to an upper-tier bowl game for the program.

Obviously you want to try to go to the biggest games you possibly can go to,” Franklin said. “Has it changed it? yeah. … I think it’s still important to go to the biggest and the best games you possibly can in the postseason. Whether that is a New Year’s Six bowl game or whatever, there’s still value in it.”

The Penn State team that takes the field for a bowl game could look much different than the one that was on the field Saturday against Michigan State. There will be roster movement in the coming weeks between the transfer portal and NFL draft declarations and then the subsequent bowl opt-outs. Quarterback Sean Clifford said he plans to play in the bowl, while NFL hopefuls Ji’Ayir Brown and PJ Mustipher were noncommittal about their postseason plans.

The Nittany Lions wouldn’t share preferences for their postseason destination, either.

“No matter where we go, it’s a blessing to get a bowl invite, definitely,” center Juice Scruggs said Saturday. “Wherever we go, I know we’re gonna be prepared and we’re gonna be ready, and that’s that.”

For his part, Franklin said he’s going to let athletic director Pat Kraft take care of any behind the scenes lobbying or maneuvering that’s involved with nailing down Penn State’s destination.

“I’m going to focus on meeting with our players, getting this film graded and recruiting,” Franklin said. “Pat will handle all these things. He’s got tremendous experience doing it. The Big Ten will do everything they possibly can to help all the teams within the conference, getting the best situations we possibly can.

“There were some interesting games last week, some interesting games this week that impact us, put us in a more favorable position, but we’ll see how it plays out.”

Here’s a look at Penn State’s current bowl projections. And remember, this post will be updated in the coming days.
