“I’ve told our guys if you want to leave, let us know and we’ll try to help you,” UNC head coach Mack Brown said recently. “You’re not leaving because you’re mad, you’re leaving because you don’t play enough. And I get that you want to play and you work too hard not to … If we’re truly about the young people, then how do you get mad at them when they want to play? I just don’t think that’s right or fair. Help us while you’re here and we’ll help you when you go, and we’ll stay in touch with you for the rest of your life.

“I’ve also told them … if they want to leave and they’re leaving for the right reasons and they’re practicing really hard to help us win this game, I don’t mind if they go in the portal and stay for the bowl game because they’re leaving because they want more playing time. If they’re doing everything right, I got it. You helped us get to this situation, I’d like for you to be able to finish it. …

“You gotta keep recruiting, you gotta keep building and it’s no different than your businesses. You try to build on it every day, and you try to make it stronger. And what we’ve got to do is if we lose a second team player because he’s not playing, and we can get a transfer portal starter in to strengthen that position, then we’re better team next year.”
