His 2015 self-titled mixtape, then <em>mono.<\/em> three years later, and now <em>indigo<\/em>, a continuation and final act in this tumultuous, surreal, chaotic, stricken, shining era.  Even if you weren&#8217;t a member of the biggest band in the world, even if you hadn&#8217;t grown from aspiring poet to underground rapper to global superstar in 10 years, you might describe your twenties like that, if you&#8217;re lucky enough to have made it through them.<\/p>\n<p>RM has held a lot in his hands over the past decade;  as the leader of BTS, he binds the group together, and as the only fluent English speaker, he serves as the group&#8217;s foremost interpreter abroad.  Those early mixtapes captured distinct phases of what comes after coming of age: the intense, raucous, angry emotion of <em>RM<\/em> followed by the whispery warm grief of <em>mono.<\/em> This newest work, his first official album, sees RM lean further into his joint roles of curator and artist, translator and scribe.  One of the most fun parts of dissecting RM&#8217;s work is how much context there is to go on.  He&#8217;s known as a museum-goer, an art collector, a voracious reader, and those elements make their way into his writing (especially with his affinity for cross-language wordplay).  On social media, he shares photographs, paintings, quotes from books, snippets of music from artists he enjoys \u2014 another archive of his own alongside the concert clips, red carpet shots, and airport paparazzi photos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy whole life was an exhibition,\u201d he told writer Lenika Cruz in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>.  \u201cUnconsciously, or maybe consciously, I&#8217;ve been exhibiting my life for decades.  so [I said], <em>Okay, then let&#8217;s make it into a real exhibition<\/em>\u201d  That exhibition is <em>indigo<\/em>, curated through collaborations with Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, Tablo, producer Docskim, Mahalia, and more, and through a spectrum of hip-hop, folk, synth, and city pop.  Each song is meant to have its own genre, its own mini act in this final 20-something tapestry.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s particularly striking on <em>indigo<\/em> is that despite how much has changed for Kim Namjoon, this exhibition often retreads the emotional states of those early records, repeated in a cycle.  Loneliness, bitterness, and heartbreak all alternate and shift and come back around;  you can&#8217;t live in blissful, peaceful calm forever.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a point of tension in <em>indigo,<\/em> the spectacle of it all combined with the cyclical nature of good and bad things that happen to us.  What he does without anyone knowing, combined with the very real, very thorough archive of BTS&#8217;s public comings and goings.  A song like \u201cLonely,\u201d which RM shared he wrote during BTS&#8217;s four-night Las Vegas residency in April, can have its melancholy lyrics paired right up against smiling photos of RM in front of the stadium.  \u201cI wanted to smash things in that room,\u201d RM said of his Las Vegas hotel in an accompanying album movie released by BigHit Music.  Outside, fans congregated and anticipated and had the time of their lives.
