Avatar: The Way of Water is finally taking us back to Pandora next week, and we now have the first reactions to see if it was worth the 13-year wait.

The long-awaited sequel held its world premiere tonight (December 6) in London and those lucky few who have seen it have taken to social media to share their initial thoughts on James Cameron’s new movie.

Among them is Digital Spy‘s very own Movies Editor Ian Sandwell, who wrote: “Unsurprisingly, Avatar: The Way of Water is a visual masterpiece with rich use of 3D and breathtaking vistas.

“It does suffer from a thin story and too many characters to juggle, yet James Cameron pulls it together for an extraordinary final act full of emotion and thrilling action.”

But don’t just take our word for it – here’s a selection of some other reactions fresh from the premiere, with the verdict ranging from ecstatic praise calling the film “pretty incredible”, to more tepid responses saying it “doesn’t really exceed expectations”.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first movie, Avatar: The Way of Water sees Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana as Jake Sully and Neytiri, who are now parents doing everything they can to keep their family together.

When a dangerous enemy returns to Pandora, the Sullys are forced to leave their home and travel across Pandora to the Metkayina clan who live in harmony with their surrounding oceans.

As Jake did in the first movie, the Sullys must learn to navigate their dangerous new home and gain acceptance from the community in order to keep everybody safe.

We already know that Avatar: The Way of Water is not the end of their story as three further movies are planned. However, Cameron revealed recently that if the sequel isn’t a hit, the series could end with the third movie.

“The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: ‘OK, let’s complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly’, if it’s just not profitable,” he explained.

With the sequel set to double the US opening of the first movie, we have a feeling Cameron might not have anything to worry about.

Avatar: The Way of Water is released in cinemas on December 16. You can watch Avatar right now on Disney+.
