On Monday, the Michelin Guide released a full list of 89 California restaurants that were decorated with stars this year, which included six Bay Area winners. The list celebrated newcomers and businesses that retained their status, but it also revealed the local restaurants that lost their Michelin stars.

In the Bay Area, 10 restaurants that held the Michelin honor last year had their stars revoked, including San Francisco’s SPQR, Wako, Mourad, Campton Place and Jū-Ni. Beyond San Francisco, restaurants La Toque in Napa and Madera in Menlo Park likewise were dropped from the list.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Michelin confirmed that the number of restaurants snubbed from the honor this year was the highest count of stars lost since at least 2019. Michelin paused its annual award in 2020 due to the pandemic and also held off on revoking stars During that time, Bon Appetit notes. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently of one another.)

Three restaurants on the list of 10 lost their stars because they succumbed to permanent closures. Such was the case for 1-starred AL’s Place in San Francisco, which shuttered in August after eight years in business. San Francisco’s 2-Michelin-starred restaurant Coi similarly lost its status this year following its closure back in March. In Burlingame, Michelin-starred restaurant Rasa closed its doors in May to convert the space into a second outpost for sister restaurant Saffron.

The list of Michelin star wins and losses comes a week after the Michelin Guide announced Bib Gourmand awardees. Local winners new to the honor included Good Good Culture Club and Hilda and Jesse in San Francisco, as well as Jo’s Modern Thai in Oakland.
