The first departure from Alabama’s coaching staff is reportedly headed to one of the more fascinating programs in the nation.

Defensive backs coach Charles Kelly is headed to Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado to be its defensive coordinator, the Boulder Daily Camera reported Wednesday afternoon. FootballScoop reported the Colorado interest in Kelly earlier in the week.

Kelly’s in his third season coaching the safeties after working at a number of Power conference schools. The Ozark, Alabama native and Auburn graduate was the defensive coordinator at Florida State from 2014-17 before coaching safeties at Tennessee in 2018. Before Florida State, Kelly was at Georgia Tech from 2006-12 in a number of defensive roles.

At Alabama, he led a group of safeties that included 2020 NFL draft pick Xavier McKinney and projected 2023 picks Jordan Battle and Brian Branch.

Kelly would be the first of Alabama’s 10 on-field assistant coaches to leave for a new job after an up-and-down 2022 that saw the preseason No. 1 Crimson Tide fail to make the playoff for only the second time in its nine years.

This post will be updated when more information is available.
