New Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell is hiring Phil Longo from North Carolina to be the Badgers’ offensive coordinator, a source familiar with the hire told The Athletic. Tar Heels offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. is also expected to join the Wisconsin staff as O-line coach. Here’s what you need to know:

The hiring of Longo represents a dramatic shift in offensive philosophy for Wisconsin, transitioning away from the program’s pro-style system to one presumably predicated around the Air Raid offense. However, Longo’s offenses also have focused on the run, which will be an important component given Wisconsin’s history of success with its offensive line and running backs. The Badgers have lacked sizzle in the passing game for much of the last decade, and the expectation is that Longo’s addition will bring new juice to the offense. North Carolina has ranked in the top 15 in total offense in each of the past four seasons under Longo. — Temple

Longo and Fickell developed a relationship that started when Longo interviewed for the Cincinnati offensive coordinator job in 2017 before he took the Ole Miss job. Longo’s rep is as an Air Raid guy, but he has produced some explosive running attacks. In 2021, his offense was second in the ACC in yards per carry, and it led the conference in 2020. It ranked in the top 10 nationally in each of those years, and in both of those seasons the Tar Heels ranked in the top two in the conference in rushing yards. — Feldman

(Photo: Bob Donnan / USA Today)
