Tar Heels offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr.  is also expected to join the Wisconsin staff as O-line coach.  Here&#8217;s what you need to know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The 54-year-old Longo has spent the past four seasons as the Tar Heels&#8217; offensive coordinator under Mack Brown.  UNC has ranked in the top 30 nationally in scoring each season.  At quarterback, Longo coached fifth-round draft pick Sam Howell and Drake Maye, who has passed for 4,115 yards this season.<\/li>\n<li>Longo was previously the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss from 2017-18 after making a jump from the FCS level.<\/li>\n<li>Wisconsin ranks 78th in scoring offense this season, and three-year starting quarterback Graham Mertz entered the transfer portal.<\/li>\n<li>Longo&#8217;s addition on offense comes a day after interim coach\/defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard announced that he&#8217;ll leave Wisconsin after the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What does adding Longo mean for Wisconsin?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The hiring of Longo represents a dramatic shift in offensive philosophy for Wisconsin, transitioning away from the program&#8217;s pro-style system to one presumably predicated around the Air Raid offense.  However, Longo&#8217;s offenses also have focused on the run, which will be an important component given Wisconsin&#8217;s history of success with its offensive line and running backs.  The Badgers have lacked sizzle in the passing game for much of the last decade, and the expectation is that Longo&#8217;s addition will bring new juice to the offense.  North Carolina has ranked in the top 15 in total offense in each of the past four seasons under Longo. <em>\u2014 Temple<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Why did Wisconsin pick Longo?<\/h2>\n<p>Longo and Fickell developed a relationship that started when Longo interviewed for the Cincinnati offensive coordinator job in 2017 before he took the Ole Miss job.  Longo&#8217;s rep is as an Air Raid guy, but he has produced some explosive running attacks.  In 2021, his offense was second in the ACC in yards per carry, and it led the conference in 2020.
