It wasn’t much of a surprise to Mississippi State fans that have been locked into the message boards the last few days, but a tough hit to the roster came on Wednesday night as running back Dillon Johnson hit the portal.

If Johnson leaving wasn’t big enough news, his announcement on Twitter certainly made the headlines. The junior running back blasted head coach Mike Leach on the way out.

“..Since I am not very tough, and Leach is glad I am leaving, I will be entering my name into the transfer portal with the hopes of finding a more fit playing environment for me,” Johnson said in his Twitter post.

There’s no further details as to what Johnson is specifically referring to, but the Bulldog running back hasn’t been shy about voicing his opinions on the Bulldogs running the football. After MSU’s Egg Bowl win over Ole Miss, he sounded off on the offense.

“I feel like we just need to run the ball. That’s just what it comes down to,” Johnson said. “Coach Leach was telling us to get ourselves some hard runs and not get behind the sticks. It was definitely good to get the running game going.”

It was hard to question Johnson’s toughness in maroon and white. While the Bulldogs didn’t feature the running game, Johnson and running mate Jo’Quavious Marks touched the ball plenty and had to fight through injuries along the way.

This year was a good one for Johnson when he was healthy. He equaled his carries from last season with 89 but in two fewer games while rushing for three more yards with 488 and three touchdowns. Johnson also caught 48 passes for 285 yards this season. When he was running the football regularly, MSU’s offense seemed to be at its best.

In three years, the Greenville St. Joseph graduate had 229 carries for 1,198 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 149 passes for 864 yards and a score. The 6’0, 215-pounder helped the Irish to three-straight state championships in the MAIS and played on both sides of the ball.

Johnson joins fellow offensive starter Rara Thomas in the portal along with wide receiver Christian Ford, quarterback Daniel Greek and running back Ke’Travion Hargrove, and offensive linemen Reed Buys and Carson Williams. One of MSU’s regular punters Archer Trafford also entered the portal on Tuesday. Arguably, Johnson is the biggest loss to this point.

“To Mississippi State University, my teammates, trainers and amazing fans, it has been an honor to participate in this program with you all,” Johnson said in his statement. “Together, you guys have helped me build my character and skills tremendously.”
