Champaign and Illinois athletics lost its bid to host the Illinois state football championships. <\/b>The Illinois High School Association and its board of directors announced Wednesday that the IHSA State Football Championships will move to Bloomington-Normal after nearly 20 years of hosting at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium.<\/p>\n

  • Illinois hosted the football state championships from 1999-2012 and then in 2014, 2016, <\/span>2018 and 2022.<\/li>\n
  • Hancock Stadium in Normal previously hosted the football state championship games from 1974-1998.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Behind the move: <\/b>The IHSA sought and prioritized a host that could host the event every single year. The IHSA had to rotate the state championships between Champaign and DeKalb during the last decade due to Illinois hosting a Big Ten home game every other year during Thanksgiving weekend, the same weekend as the IHSA State championships. <\/span><\/p>\n

    • Illinois State, Northern Illinois University (NIU) in DeKalb and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale each submitted bids to host the IHSA State Finals from 2023-2027. <\/span><\/li>\n
    • The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana submitted a bid to host in 2024, 2026, and 2028.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
