The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley says this year’s awards are the shortest yet.

“Tonight is probably the shortest show we’ve done,” he said on Twitter. “It will still run 2.5 hours but we’ve streamlined the runtime with more focused content, fewer, bigger sponsors, and some big theatrical moments.”

What those theatrical moments will be, remains to be seen… but it sounds like they’re packing a lot into the show’s reduced runtime.

“A shorter runtime means less potential to pick up viewers,” he added. “We aren’t expecting massive livestream growth, but feel this is the right move for the industry and franchise leading into our 10th show next year.”

The Game Awards returns with a live audience tonight for the first time in three years. Nominations include some of the biggest games of the year, and you can expect plenty of big moments, such as game reveals, musical numbers, and well… the awards themselves.

“The reveals are spaced out across the show, so we hope the pacing will feel good,” explained Keighley. “There are lots of fun moments. We’ve also held back surprise presenters, performers, and lots of games that aren’t pre-announced.”

As for the reveals themselves, it sounds like a bumper year:

“There are games revealing tonight I’ve been waiting to show you for years,” he added. “We don’t make the games so we are only as good as what’s shipping and what’s ready to showcase. I do feel really good about this year’s lineup.”

The Game Awards are free to stream for everyone tonight, December 8 at 4 pm PT / 7 pm ET starting with the IGN Pre-Show. The ceremony will start at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET once the pre-show has wrapped up.

“You’ll have an opinion on the split between awards/reveals, the ads, the winners — we fully expect and embrace that. I hope you walk away feeling good and proud to be part of this community. The work done this year and the future of the medium is so incredibly exciting.”
