\tThe National Board of Review has named Top Gun: Maverick<\/em> as its best movie of 2022.<\/p>\n

\n

\tThe Tom Cruise-starring sequel also won outstanding achievement in cinematography.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Banshees of Inisherin<\/em> won a leading three awards, including best actor (Colin Farrell), best supporting actor (Brendan Gleeson) and best original screenplay for Martin McDonagh.<\/p>\n

\n

\tSteven Spielberg won best director for The Fabelmans<\/em>with the film’s Gabriel LaBelle winning breakthrough performance alongside Till<\/em> star Danielle Deadwyler.<\/p>\n

\n

\tMichelle Yeoh was named best actress for her starring role in Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>and Janelle Mon\u00e1e won best supporting actress for her role in Knives Out<\/em> sequel Glass Onion<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

\tThe award for best adapted screenplay went to All Quiet on the Western Front<\/em>‘s Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell.<\/p>\n

\n\tMarcel the Shell With Shoes On<\/em> was named best animated feature, with Close<\/em> taking best international movie; Sr.<\/em>, about Robert Downey Jr.’s father, named best documentary; and Women Talking<\/em> being recognized with the best ensemble.<\/p>\n

\n

\t\u201cTop Gun: Maverick <\/em>is a thrilling crowd-pleaser that is expertly crafted on every level,\u201d NBR president Annie Schulhof said in a statement. \u201cTom Cruise, Joseph Kosinski and the entire filmmaking team have succeeded in making an incredibly popular film that brought audiences back to theaters, while at the same time being a full-on cinematic achievement.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n

\tThe organization’s honors are voted on by a group of film enthusiasts, professionals, academics, filmmakers and students.<\/p>\n

\n

\tNBR has a mixed record as an Oscars predictor. Last year, its top movie was Licorice Pizza<\/em>, which scored three Oscar nominations, including best picture. In 2020, its top movie was Da 5 Bloods<\/em>which ended up only landing one Oscar nomination, and in 2019, NBR selected The Irishman<\/em>, which scored several Oscar nominations but no wins. Previous NBR best movie winners include GreenBook<\/em> (2018), The Post<\/em> (2017), Manchester by the Sea<\/em> (2016) and Mad Max: Fury Road<\/em> (2015).<\/p>\n

\n

\tThis year’s NBR honorees will be celebrated at an awards gala at Ciani 42nd Street in New York on Sunday, Jan. 8, hosted by NBC News’ Willie Geist.<\/p>\n
