NEW YORK — In just over three weeks, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Ohio State Buckeyes will face off for a spot in January’s national championship game. While Ohio State’s CJ Stroud still has plenty of time to prepare for the Dec. 31 showdown in Atlanta, the Heisman Trophy candidate offered his early insight on the Buckeyes’ next opponent.

Stroud shared what he has learned about Georgia on Friday as Heisman Trophy festivities officially got under way. The junior explained he’s been watching film on the Bulldogs for a little while now, and there’s already a few aspects of this year’s Georgia team that stands out.

“They’re a great, great team. Both offense, defense, special teams. Jane Carter definitely jumps out on movie. great player. Kelee Ringo, who I know personally, great dude but a great player as well. The freshman safety, 24 [Malaki Starks], helluva player,” Stroud said. “We’ve got to be on our A game. They do a lot of good things. They know what they want to do. They know their weaknesses, and they protect those really well. I definitely think they have very little to no weaknesses, so I’m very excited to go ahead and play.”

Stroud went into detail about his familiarity with Ringo, saying he met him at Nike’s The Opening and quickly sprung up a friendship with the talented defensive back. The two later spent time together at the All-American Bowl in San Antonio as high school seniors, and over that time Stroud got to know Ringo’s family and what he’s all about.

Stroud also pointed out Ringo tried to get him to go to Georgia, which Stroud said he “appreciated.”

When asked about Georgia, Stroud explained it was his second school just behind Ohio State and that he had an excellent time when he took an official visit to Athens. Ultimately, the allure of being a Buckeye was too much for the Bulldogs to overcome.

“Honestly, I just thought Ohio State fit me a little more. I don’t think Georgia was doing anything bad, but they hadn’t seen a player like me on that side so I wasn’t really sure where to go,” Stroud said. “They explained to me that they would’ve changed the offense for me because they’ve always had dynamic receivers and tight end and running backs. It could’ve been exciting, but at the end of the day I chose to go to Ohio State. If I had it again, I would probably do it again. But no disrespect.”

Stroud strolls into the postseason having completed 66.2% of his attempts this fall for 3,340 yards with 37 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. The junior is looking to redeem himself, as he struggled in the Buckeyes’ loss to rival Michigan by going 31-of-48 through the air for 349 yards with 2 touchdowns and a season-high 2 interceptions.

Stroud emphasized he is just beginning prep on the Bulldogs in preparation for their New Year’s Eve bout in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. That sentiment was one shared earlier this week by Buckeyes head coach Ryan Daywho made it clear the Ohio State coaching staff was familiar with Georgia but had plenty to catch up on.

“We always look at Georgia and look at how they do things in the off-season, sometimes during the season. So to say that we’re knee deep in a game plan, I can’t tell you that. We watch them from afar, and they have very, very good players and a good scheme,” Day said Sunday. “We’re not that far into it, but at the same time the focus has got to be here the next couple weeks of working on fundamentals but start getting going with the game plan and put all that stuff together because they challenge you in all three phases.”
