The stage was set for a memorable Border War atmosphere on Saturday as No. 6 Kansas visited its enemy territory for the first time in more than a decade to face undefeated Missouri.

Then the game tipped off.

It quickly became the first flop of the Dennis Gates era.

Kansas, never rattled by hours of boos and chants from Mizzou students before, during and after Saturday’s game, played like another Final Four contender in a 95-67 blowout on Norm Stewart Court.

“The atmosphere was electric tonight. We knew the crowd was going to come out and create a lot of energy.”

An astute observation — from a Jayhawk, no less.

That was Kansas guard Kevin McCullar Jr., one of several Jayhawks who thrived off the deafening roar from the 15,061 strong inside Mizzou Arena.

Mizzou, on the other hand, looked overmatched, sometimes flustered by the moment, and rarely resembled the team that cruised unscathed through the season’s first month. After feasting on an intentionally scheduled serving of low- and mid-major conference cupcakes, the Tigers (9-1) could never sink their teeth into their first nationally ranked opponent. The No. 6 Jayhawks (9-1) led by as many as 19 points in the first half, surged ahead by 24 early in the second half, dominated the paint and drilled open 3-pointers from all over the court.

“It was an outstanding atmosphere. I thought our guys did a great job leading into this game,” Gates said. “I thought their level of focus was excellent. We shot the ball well in practice. But there’s a reason why Kansas is top 10 in the country. There’s a reason why Bill Self is a Hall of Fame coach. I thought we showed and displayed different things throughout the game, where we almost had runs going. But somehow, some way whether a missed free throw or a turnover sort of took the wind out of the sail.”

It wasn’t the 37-point rashing Mizzou last year in Lawrence, but the Tigers had no early answer for forward KJ Adams Jr. (19 points) or freshman guard Gradey Dick (16 points, 15 in the first half) — and in the second half couldn’t contain Jalen Wilson (24) or McCullar (21). For the first time all year, Gates’ balanced lineup didn’t produce that consistent scoring threat.

It wasn’t D’Moi Hodge.

It wasn’t Isiaih Mosley, who for the third game this season never left the bench.

Mizzou struggled to finish at the rim, making just 14 of 24 layups with zero dunks, and was even worse from 3-point range, shooting just 6 of 20. But the Tigers’ true undoing came before they launched those wayward shots: MU turned the ball over a season-high 21 times, leading directly to 28 Kansas points.

On the defensive end, MU had suffocated teams with pressure defense, creating easy scoring chances in transition. That didn’t happen Saturday. Mizzou, the nation’s leader in scoring and steals when the day began, stole the ball a season-low five times. Kansas point guard Dajaun Harris, playing in his hometown, was Self’s unsung hero, turning the ball over just twice in 33 minutes while notching nine assists.

“I’ll look at it like this: They had 28 points off turnovers. We lost by 28,” Gates said. “Some of those turnovers are hidden in missed layups. … I thought Kansas did a great job of forcing us into ill-advised shots that we normally would not take in transition. We usually would try to get to the foul line, get to the basket. But more importantly, I thought our missed shots led to us to being discouraged.”

In KU’s first visit to Mizzou Arena since the Tigers left the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference in 2012, MU students lined up hours before tipoff to claim their seats — greeted by football coach Eli Drinkwitz delivering pizzas — and then stormed the building when the doors opened at 2:45. A stampede ensued in the arena corridors as students flocked to their section on the building’s west side, then spent the next 90 minutes emptying their lungs at every fan, player and coach decked in blue.

The sold-out arena was full of Mizzou dignitaries, from Hall of Fame coaches Norm Stewart and Gary Pinkel to former star athletes Max Scherzer, Rickey Paulding and Sophie Cunningham. Midway through the first half, Drinkwitz made his way into the student section and became the crowd’s loudest $6 million cheerleader.

“The crowd was very welcoming,” Self said, joking. “But in all honesty, you want to be in environments where people care. And there was obviously a caring environment today. Mizzou turned out and the crowd was great. I thought our guys really did a good job of not letting them go on runs that could have really got the crowd more into the game.”

This one got out of hand shortly after Truman descended from the rafters shaking his furry tail. Six minutes into the action, Gates burned a timeout as Kansas raced ahead 26-12 by hitting 10 straight shots from the field. The onslaught continued throughout the half. Coming out of the 12-minute timeout, the Tigers set up a baseline out-of-bounds play for bouncy freshman Aidan Shaw with a lob pass from Tre Gomillion. But the pass was off and KU’s McCullar made the interception and raced for an uncontested transition dunk, good for a 30-16 lead.

In the second half, the Tigers turned the ball over on three of their first four possessions. MU briefly took advantage of a Kansas lull, connecting on eight straight shots to get within 15 of the lead. The Tigers never got closer.

By the final minutes, Self had emptied his bench — walk-on Michael Jankovich drilled a 3 for the finishing touch — as the “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” chant billowed through the building for the first time in more than a decade.

From here, the Tigers have plenty to resolve. After a week of final exams, they head to Miami on Saturday to play UCF, then the Braggin’ Rights game against Illinois on Dec. 22. They’ll need more from Brown, who managed just four points on five shots in 20 minutes. The Tigers were bullied inside — KU outscored the Tigers 46-28 in the paint —and need more production from behind the arc. Outside of Hodge, the rest of the team shot just 2 of 11 from 3-point range.

And what about Mosley? The prolific scorer from Missouri State did n’t see the floor, never getting a chance to play against his high school teammate, KU’s Harris. Gates has not elaborated on Mosley’s situation other than he’s dealing with a personal issue. Mosley was on the court practicing against teammates for more than an hour after Saturday’s loss.

“I anticipate Isiaih helping us, without a doubt,” Gates said. “We have to look at the big picture. Whenever you are in transition, no different than these guys, transition happens. And the transition that Isiaih is going through, he’s gonna get to the other side of it and he’s gonna help us win ball games. I’m excited about him. He’s been present. … He is an unbelievable young man. But everyone’s transition is different. He’ll help us, without a doubt. I’m anticipating that, and I can’t wait to have him out there to help us.”
