While as ever, there are many issues Destiny 2 is facing, there has been one major change that seems to be attracting a lot of positive attention within the community for Season of the Seraph.

Bungie made the game…harder.

Specifically, they did this not by hard-nerfing popular player builds, but by buffing enemies in one particular place, the standard seasonal activity story playlist. The Heist Battlegrounds playlist has set its enemy power level to automatically +5 above wherever players are. So you cannot overlevel for it. Combined with champions and significant enemy density, it’s made the seasonal activity this time around…actually kind of difficult.

Most players seem to be enjoying this, myself included. A common complaint about much of Destiny 2’s content is that you can complete it all with blue weapons if you really wanted to because it’s just that easy. But changing things up like this, and taking a page from the Witch Queen legendary campaign which I believe had +10 enemies instead, and now it’s a genuine challenge that forces you to do some actual buildcrafting and strategic play.

In fact, the +5 power differential is so popular, I’m seeing players start to suggest that it should be ported over for a heroic version of the strike playlist, one with boosted rewards. It’s contributing to the idea that power level in Destiny 2 is growing increasingly irrelevant as it’s removed from more and more activities, now even the seasonal one, in this case.

However, there are some issues, namely that the fact that Champions are in this playlist (they weren’t in the legendary Witch Queen campaign) still really restricts the type of loadouts you can run. And because the missions are harder, they are on the whole, longer.

Bungie has made an additional change to help with this, however. The grind to get weapons from the seasonal activity, specifically crafting patterns, is a lot less oppressive than it’s been in the past. There are going to be two guaranteed Deepsight weapon drops a week with knockout protection, plus an addition upgrade to give more chances at Deepsights from the final chest. There are guaranteed Deepsight engrams in the rep rank-up area, and the currencies to farm both IKELOS and Seraph weapons are more readily available than they’ve been before.

In short, you are playing harder, longer seasonal activities, but you don’t have to run them as much throughout the season to get all the weapons you’re after. To me, this represents a really positive change.

Bungie has said they will be doing experiments with power level throughout next year, and this “interim” phase is a little weird because for instance, the dungeon was in some ways easier than the seasonal activity this week, because it’s at 1570 power as opposed to Heist’s +5. Sort of odd.

But yes, I would view this as a positive change overall, as I’m already finding Heists more engaging than Nightmare Containment or Ketchcrash as a result. We’ll see if this continues as the season goes on, but it does seem like one answer to some of Destiny’s woes is making core content a touch more challenging, and simultaneously, more rewarding.
