This week sees the Xbox Store host not only the usual weekly Xbox sales but also The Game Awards sale to coincide with Geoff Keighley’s show — check out our round-up of everything announced for Xbox during The Game Awards. Both are offering discounts on games across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC, so the TA news team has had a look to see what games they personally think are great gets.

This week we invite you on a quest to spit in the face of tyranny, take on the form of a sun goddess, hunt down the everlasting Lord of Darkness, and repair that which you broke by making the hard decisions. The adventures found within are full of excitement, wonder, and beauty… check them out!

It’s not really fair for a game to be as beautiful as Okami HD — that striking sumi-e art style could easily hold your attention all by itself (and I did tend to spend quite a lot of time just running around and drinking in the sights ) but Okami has an epic story as well; we play as the sun god Amaterasu and, wielding the power of the celestial brush, set out to rid the world of Orochi and the curse placed upon the world. It’s an exquisite game and, despite it having been five years since Okami HD arrived for Xbox One, I can’t really think of any other game like it that’s come out since. If you hadn’t been sure about it at full price for $20/£16, 50% off might tempt you now — especially since the game is currently at the lowest price we’ve seen it.

Seeing Dead Cells’ Castlevania expansion as the first of many Xbox announcements from The Game Awards gave me a hankering to dust off the old classics, and as luck would have it, a bunch of them are on sale this week. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is obviously an all-timer and helped spawn an entire genre of exploration-based action games in its name, so that’s a no-brainer if you haven’t played it, and I really rate Lords of Shadow as well, despite it being a bit of a deviation from the traditional formula. The same can be said of my main pick this week, Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, actually — the series isn’t exactly known for having six-player co-op, nor for its level-based loot runs as you try to build up one of several characters from previous games, each with their own systems and abilities that make them play completely differently from one another. It’s a weird twist for sure, but I love it.

The potato quality thumbnail for the trailer above is actually pretty fitting, because Harmony of Despair isn’t much of a looker. It pulls together sprites and art from across a bunch of earlier Castlevania titles, meaning it can look and feel a little all over the place — look past that, though, and there’s a compelling loop that will see you venturing back into the various massive maps in search of loot and abilities to make your hero of choice ever stronger. It’s a grind by design, which might put some people off, but it’s something I often find myself going back to, and the variety in character play styles means it’s easy to mix things up if they do start getting a bit repetitive. Oh, and the music’s amazing, as you would expect from a Castlevania game. If you want something more traditional, go with Symphony or wait for Advance Collection to be discounted again. But if you want something so out-there that it almost feels more like a brilliant fan game than an official release, this oddity is definitely worth a shot.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

Step into the shadows of the hell house: Castlevania is back in all its pixel-powered 2D glory, this time in full 1080p! Call upon the series’ most hallowed heroes and vanquish your nemesis, Dracula! All-new multiplayer modes like 6-player Co-op and Survival have been whipped up for you, too… but enough talk. Have it at it!

Oxenfree is on sale this week for the outrageously low price of $1.99/£1.67/€1.99, and if you don’t own it already, firstly, shame on you, secondly, buy it now! Oxenfree is an excellent supernatural narrative adventure game about a group of friends who accidentally open unleash a supernatural force on a secluded island. Playing as Alex, you and your four friends must figure out what this strange paranormal thing is and put a stop to it. Gameplay revolves around dialogue choices and solving a few puzzles, but what I really like about Oxenfree is how it allows you to explore an environment while still conversing with other characters, freeing you up to interact with things and get the story moving. When conversing with your pals, you will need to be careful with what dialogue options you pick, as choices do affect the narrative and the ending of the game. I like this as going back to Oxenfree for a second time, I found out more about the characters and the world they live in. The only downsides, I would say, is that some of the voice acting isn’t great, and there are some periods where you’re just walking through a somewhat empty environment, which can feel tedious on a second playthrough. Overall, though, the story and mystery you unravel is excellent and one that shouldn’t be missed. As for the Oxenfree achievements, you will need to play through the game several times to unlock them all, but if you use our Oxenfree walkthrough, a completion here is a breeze… if perhaps a little tiresome.

I’ve hailed Far Cry 6 as a great get before, I know, but this week seems like a great time to pick up the Game of the Year Edition for 60% off the asking price. Why? Because Ubisoft decided to surprise us all with yet another expansion, which is included in this bundle. Picking this up will get you the base game, all three roguelite experiences through the minds of the series’ previous “bad guys,” a copy of Far Cry 3 Classic via the Season pass, a bundle of in-game items, and access to Lost Between Worlds, the latest expansion to Dani Rojas’ adventure. In Lost Between Worlds, Rojas is locked within a supernatural prison, with the only means of escape being the completion of numerous trials to find pieces of a broken crystal — your only chance of making it back to Yara. I thought the base game was fantastic personally, and being able to pick up everything in one bundle for far less than the usual £100 price tag seems like a great way time to experience the game for yourself in its entirety.
