King Charles III got into the Christmas spirit, releasing a charming holiday card featuring his wife Queen Camilla by his side. The official Christmas card features a newly released photo of the King and Queen, Camilla is adorned in traditional Christmas colors – a forest green beret capped with a feather and coat with a red tartan trim – an homage to Scotland, a place the couple holds dear .

King Charles wore a pale tweed blazer with a red, green and gold tie along with a purple flower boutonniere pinned to his jacket.

“Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year,” the card reads.

The photo was taken earlier this year in September when King Charles and Camilla were attending the Braemar Gathering near Balmoral, in Scotland.

The late Queen, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was unable to attend the event for the first time in her 70 year reign due to mobility issues.

The Christmas card marks King Charles and Camilla’s first since his mother’s death in September, the photo was taken just days before Her Majesty died on September 8.

The late Queen, like her son and Camilla, had a deep connection with Scotland and Balmoral was said to be her favorite residence.

Although the Queen was unable to attend the event, it was live streamed for the first time in its history so that she could watch the games from the comfort of Balmoral.

The Braemar Gathering is one of the most famous Highland Games events in the world and takes place on the first Saturday of September every year near the castle.

The tradition of sending a royal Christmas card goes back more than 100 years.

One of the first royal Christmas cards was sent by King George V and Queen Mary – Queen Elizabeth II’s grandparents – with a handwritten note to troops in the UK during the first year of the First World War.

“With our best wishes for Christmas 1914, may God protect you and bring you home safe,” the card read.

Since then, the cards have become a bit more chipper with most of the royal households sending out a holiday greeting with their best wishes.
