SANTA CLARA — Coach Kyle Shanahan was awaiting injury updates Monday morning, as many of the 49ers’ injured players, including Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy, were having tests done at Stanford Hospital.

One player the 49ers know will not be available for the team’s Thursday night game against the Seattle Seahawks is rookie cornerback Sam Womack, who is in the concussion protocol.

Samuel likely sustained a high ankle sprain in the 49ers’ 35-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, and the team is bracing for the wide receiver to miss a considerable amount of time.

Also, Purdy’s availability is in question after he sustained an oblique strain. Josh Johnson would start at quarterback Thursday if Purdy isn’t available.

Defensive tackle Kevin Givens likely will miss extended time with a left knee injury, Shanahan said. The team hopes Givens’ injury is to the medial collateral ligament.

Other players who sustained injuries Sunday were defensive linemen Kerry Hyder (ankle), and defensive backs Ambry Thomas (ankle) and Dontae Johnson (knee).

Samuel’s injury was cause for the greatest concern Sunday.

The play occurred with five minutes remaining in the second quarter, when Samuel took an inside handoff from quarterback Brock Purdy to the left side and cut it back inside for a 3-yard gain.

Bucs linebacker Rakeem Nunez-Roches grabbed Samuel around his waist to tackle him, and Samuel twisted as linebacker Anthony Nelson hit him from the other side. Samuel’s left leg got pinned underneath Nunez-Roches, and Samuel fumbled the ball, which Tampa Bay recovered.

Samuel immediately grabbed at his left knee. He tried to get up to walk off the field under his own power but went back to the ground, and was taken back to the locker-room area on a cart.

The 49ers originally announced that Samuel left the game with a knee injury. In the third quarter, the team ruled out Samuel’s return and updated the injury to “ankle.”

Afterward, Shanahan said X-rays did not reveal a fracture, but it was suspected to be a high ankle sprain, which refers to damage to the ankle ligaments that connect the tibia to the fibula — the two bones of the lower leg.

The 49ers are closing in on an NFC playoff spot, and Samuel is a huge factor in the team’s bid to advance in the postseason.
