Irish Illustrated and 247Sports have learned that sophomore tight end Cane Berrong will transfer from the University of Notre Dame. The 6-3, 243-pounder from Hart County high school in Hartwell, Ga., signed with the Fighting Irish as part of the 2021 class, but will finish his playing career elsewhere.

Berrong played in three games during his freshman season back in 2021. He saw action against Wisconsin, Cincinnati and Virginia Tech. In 2022, Berrong appeared on only five snaps. He played in fewer than four games on the season.

Ahead of the Boston College game in November, head coach Marcus Freeman was asked about the status of Berrong. It was then that he mentioned we could see him on the field in some capacity to wrap up the season.

“Cane Berrong has been practicing,” said Freeman. “He’s been getting reps with the offense and some special teams reps. He’s doing a really good job. He’s pretty much back.”

That said, it looks like the Fighting Irish football career has come to a class for the one-time four-star recruit, who chose Notre Dame over offers from Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Michigan and many others.

247Sports Scouting Report: Mid-sized tight end without great length. Doesn’t have overwhelming physical traits and fits more into the ‘move’ tight end box but is capable of playing attached. Appears to embrace blocking. He has some fluidity with the ball in his hands. He shows competency with full complement of routes. Good plan as a route-runner. Consistent catcher. He influences as blocker more than overpowers. Enough athleticism but not a true mismatch problem in college. Polished hybrid tight end that has the football IQ to be a Power Five impact starter but will need continued physical development to maximize that but still has late round NFL Draft upside.

Stay locked to Irish Illustrated, as we keep you posted on what’s next for Berrong.
