For the first time since the 1993 Citrus Bowl and for only the second time in program history, Georgia is set to take on Ohio State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve. The Dawgs are headed back to Atlanta for the third time this season as part of the College Football Playoff semifinal after they ranked No. 1 in the selection committee’s final rankings.

With Ohio State playing in the Peach Bowl for the first time, Buckeyes fans did not hesitate to scoop up its allotment of tickets.

“We got the tickets to Ohio State on Monday and they sold out Wednesday, which may be a record for us in any of our nine years being in the CFP,” Peach Bowl CEO Gary Stokan said on Tuesday.

If there was any question where Georgia fans had Mercedes-Benz Stadium fatigue, having already played there eight times in the last six seasons, it was put to rest quickly after the CFP matchups were announced.

“Yeah, you know Sunday we find out just like everybody else,” Stokan told reporters on Wednesday. “We find out on Sunday. We’ve obviously had calls with pretty much the top 12 schools going through our institutional guide of the events and where they’d be staying, etc. etc., and the ticket people. So they know what the allotment is. We go 50-yard line up and over with 13,000 tickets for each school, and Georgia sold out on Monday. So, they had one day and they sold out. I got a call from Josh [Brooks] before the SEC Championship Game. [He said]’Hey, can you help me because I’m going to need some more tickets.'”

Georgia and Ohio State have spent most of the season ranked inside the top 3, with the Buckeyes falling to No. 4 after the 45-23 regular-season finale loss to Michigan. The highly-anticipated SEC vs Big Ten matchup has resulted in the demand quickly exceeding the supply.

“It’s a great problem to have, but it’s a problem,” Stokan said. “You know, we all wish we had more tickets. I’ve had to tell a lot of people that, you know, I don’t have any tickets, which is tough. But we have added 2,000 more. We’re using all the expandables on both sidelines and in the end zone, so we’ll probably get up to about 78,000, maybe a little bit more potentially, which maxes out pretty much Mercedes-Benz Stadium.”

The attendance record for Mercedez-Benz Stadium was set three years ago when 78,347 saw LSU take down Oklahoma 63-28 in the 2019 Peach Bowl. Stokan expects to break that this year. With 26,000 total tickets allocated to Georgia and Ohio State, Stokan discussed where the other 50,000+ tickets go.

“Yeah, so there’s pockets,” Stokan said. “You’ve got sponsors, right? You’ve got comp tickets. You have trade-outs. You’ve got Mercedes-Benz, which their PSL holders have the rights to buy tickets to the game. We’ve got a huge renewal base after all these years of selling out. So, that’s probably the big chunks of where the tickets are going. And we were sold out in July before we even knew who the two teams were. And I think a lot of people in our renewal base, they’ll buy the tickets waiting to see who the teams are, and if they like the teams they’ll use the tickets. If they have a friend who’s an alumnus of one of those schools or a business associate, they give the tickets to them or — as we’ve learned, all of us who buy tickets — the secondary market becomes the primary market.”
