Not long after adding Stanford offensive tackle Myles Hinton via the transfer portal, Michigan poached another former Cardinal up front when center Drake Nugent committed to Jim Harbaugh, Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines.

Rimington Award winner Olu Oluwatimi will depart after this season and Nugent will be among those to compete for his spot in the middle of the Wolverines offensive line. He left Stanford having started 24 games in a row under David Shaw and was among a mass exodus of sorts from the program after Shaw’s departure.

The commitment of Nugent gives the Wolverines a fourth addition to the program via the portal as he joins offensive lineman LaDarius Henderson, linebacker Ernest Hausmann and the aforementioned Hinton.

247Sports Scouting Report: Wide build with broad shoulders and strong lower half. Physical, prototype center that reaches second level consistently. Nasty streak and plays through whistle. Knocks back defenders with strong punch. Able to recognize when he should help accompanying guard. Could improve pass protection technique. Needs to plant feet firmly to hold ground against pass rush. Potential multi-year starter down the road.

Michigan enters the final stretch of the 2023 recruiting class hovering around the Top20 in the 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings with a class heavy on high-ceiling prospects on both sides of the football.

The Wolverines continue to be led by four-star Texas defender Enow Etta along with four-stars Evan Link (OL), Cole Cabana (RB) and Amir Herring (OL) among others.

One area the staff has turned into a huge focus is in Ohio, home to rival Ohio State. With two wins in a row over the Buckeyes, Michigan believes they can start to make the longtime recruiting stronghold one once again. They currently have a trio of November commits from the state and have their eyes on a few more in both the 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes.

“It’s a major priority,” defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale said of Ohio. “Really, to be honest with you, anywhere we have connections and anywhere where there’s talented football players is an extreme priority. And Ohio, always being just right down the street — I’m from Ohio, and I know that football there is a high level. And so we definitely want to continue to tap into that.

“The different players we have on our team from Ohio have been a very big impact for us. So we’re gonna continue to do that. Build those relationships back up and continue to bring those players up here and show them what we’re about. And it’s been going pretty well here recently. So we want to continue that trend and continue with the ’24 class and anybody else and finalized the ’23 class.”
