Within minutes of the Michigan football team’s 42-27 win over Ohio State last fall, the Wolverines’ most ardent fans turned their attention to the recruiting impact.

It sounds cutthroat, but in a sport where talent acquisition is completely continent upon top players simply wanting to be a part of the program you build, big, long-awaited wins are shortly followed by many wondering if the next generation of top football players were paying attention.

And over the following year and change, Michigan scored plenty of those moments. The Wolverines won the Big Ten, throttled divisional foes Michigan State and Penn State, beat Ohio State again and won the Big Ten again, too, capping their first-ever 13-0 season. Outside of 2021 national champion Georgia, no program has had a better last 13 months on the field than Michigan.

And finally, last week, the Wolverines hit pay dirt on the recruiting trail as a result. While Michigan’s 2023 recruiting class has underwhelmed, the Wolverines hit the ground running in the NCAA’s Transfer Portal window, which began Dec. 5, and haven’t looked back yet.

Over the window’s first two weeks, Michigan picked up Arizona State’s starting left guard (LaDarius Henderson), Nebraska starting linebacker (Ernest Hausmann), Stanford starting right tackle (Myles Hinton), Coastal Carolina starting edge defender (Josaiah Stewart) and Stanford starting center (Drake Nugent), Indiana’s backup quarterback (Jack Tuttle) and Indiana’s starting tight end (AJ Barner V). According to 247Sports’ transfer portal player rankings, Michigan landed the No. 1 linebacker, No. 1 center, No. 2 interior offensive lineman, the No. 2 EDGE defenders, No. 4 offensive tackle, No. 5 tight end and No. 23 quarterback in a designed backup role.

It was an onslaught of instant-impact talent that college football fans typically only dream about, and one that resulted in Michigan entering the latest dead period with far and away the best transfer portal recruiting class in the country, per 247Sports.

Here’s a look at how the Wolverines pulled it off, and what it means for the maize and blue moving forward.
