Several possible theories are circulating on social media among The Witcher fans about why Cavill decided to leave Geralt behind. Cavill’s announcement of his departure caught audiences by surprise, as The Witcher stood as one of Netflix’s biggest shows and was a passion project of Cavill’s. In the past, Cavill has talked extensively about his love of The Witcher games and especially its source material, the books. The latter might’ve been why Cavill left, as the actor has reportedly fought behind the scenes of the show for years to get a more book-accurate version of Geralt on Netflix. Audiences speculate he finally gave up on his efforts and decided to leave The Witcher behind.

Another popular theory links Cavill’s departure from The Witcher to his return as Superman in the DC movie Black Man, before DC Head James Gunn announced a reboot and Cavill’s Superman exit a couple of months later. The strenuous filming schedule for a season of The Witcher, which has ranged from 5 to 12 months, could’ve been an obstacle to Cavill starring in a Superman project, with the actor choosing the Man of Steel over Geralt in the end. Sadly for Cavill, if that was the reasoning behind his decision to leave The Witcher, the actor has left a dream job for nothing, as Gunn’s Superman reboot in the DCU will star a younger actor in the role. With Cavill out, The Witcher recast Geralt of Rivia for season 4 and generated a lot of chatter on social media over the chosen actor.
