Kankakee (Illi.) 2023 four-star cornerback Jyaire Hill called an audible at his college signing ceremony on Wednesday afternoon at his high school.

The top-200 recruit had been trending toward Michigan in recent weeks, but he surprisingly left the Wolverines out of his top five schools that he announced Monday: Florida, Illinois, Purdue, Kentucky and Missouri.

It appears his top schools list was just a pump fake. Hill, listed at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, ended up choosing Michigan, becoming its 23rd addition this cycle and the second to commit on national signing day.

The No. 194 overall prospect nationally, per the 247Sports Composite rankings, is Michigan’s fourth top-200 recruit in the class.

“Has the desired physical tools for a high-end defensive back prospect,” 247Sports recruiting analyst Allen Trieu wrote in his scouting report. “Has good height and length. Track background and verified combine results back up his straight line speed. He has additionally shown his athleticism and open-field ability as a return man and offensive player.

“Shows good hands and ability to play the ball in the air. Will flash in run support and run through ball carriers. Still needs to get stronger but willingness with contact is a good sign for his future in run support. He projects as a cornerback or free safety. He has the versatility and measurables to do either at a high level, he will just need to get to college and focus on a position and continue to develop his technique. ”

A month ago, the Wolverines didn’t have any cornerbacks this cycle, but they’ve added three since. Hill joins Cincinnati (Ohio) Winton Woods three-star Cameron Calhoun and Youngstown (Ohio) Chaney three-star DJ Waller.

Michigan and Illinois had long been considered the favorites to land Hill, who racked up 28 total offers. He visited both schools multiple times this year and was at Michigan Stadium for the Wolverines 19-7 win over the Illini on Nov. 19.

“With the secondary holes they’re gonna have coming up next season, he is very important in the class,” The Michigan Insider’s Brice Marich told MLive this week. “A guy that I think has five-star potential in terms of his skill set. There are a couple of things he needs to work on, but he has all the tools and traits you want at the corner position.”
