During his early signing period press conference, Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck accused Wisconsin of negatively recruiting one of his commitsdefensive tackle Martin Owusu. The Badgers had made a late scholarship offer to the three-star prospect on Tuesday, less than 24 hours prior to the start of the early signing period, but Owusu stayed firm to the Gophers.

“Wisconsin came in, tried to flip him early,” said Fleck. “Showed me all the text messages of them doing everything they can to negative recruit to flip us and it didn’t work.

“So, we axed it.”

First-year head coach Luke Fickellwho was hired by UW last month, addressed Fleck’s comments when asked.

“I know nothing about — I’ve never, I won’t negative recruit,” said Fickell. “I’m not saying that somebody didn’t call. I know, we may have reached out to somebody, but I wouldn’t think that we would have said anything negative about a guy going anywhere.

“We’ve got plenty of positive to say about what it is we do. Some people say, well, that’s recruiting, I don’t think that’s recruiting. I mean, we’ve got enough good things to say about the program here and the things that we want to do and where we’re headed to worry about saying anything negative about anybody else.

“I don’t get involved in a lot of the negative recruiting stuff. Whether people say it about us, and they say we say it about them, really focused on the things that we do and the positive things that we’ve got going for us.”

Wisconsin signed 14 high school scholarship prospects on Wednesday, a group that currently ranks No. 61 in the 247sports composite team recruiting rankings.

The Badgers will be looking to end a two-game slide against the Gophers when the two teams get together on Nov. 25 in Minneapolis.
