GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Graham Mertz, a 32-game starter at Wisconsin, is bound for Florida, multiple sources with knowledge of the decision confirmed to The Athletic, joining a quarterback competition that features fellow Big Ten transferred Jack Miller. Here’s what you need to know:

Mertz needed a reset after falling short of stratospheric expectations at Wisconsin. Expectations were fueled by recruiting rankings and his five-touchdown debut against Illinois in 2020 as a redshirt freshman. He compiled 38 touchdown passes and 26 interceptions in three years as a starter — a stretch where the Badgers began each season 18th or higher in the AP poll only to finish unranked.

Mertz finished seventh in Big Ten passing efficiency this season (135), throwing for 2,136 yards, with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. That produced his highest individual passer rating as a starter, though the typically steady program lurched into upheaval Oct. 2 with the firing of eighth-year head coach Paul Chryst. It was Chryst who stuck with the redshirt freshman Mertz late in 2020 after veteran Jack Coan recovered from a foot injury. Coan left as a grad transfer and steered Notre Dame to an 11-2 record in 2021.

After the Badgers wrapped up a 6-6 regular season, Wisconsin hired head coach Luke Fickell from Cincinnati in late November and Mertz announced he was entering the portal a week later. The Badgers are preparing to face Oklahoma State in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Dec. 27.

With Richardson departing and Jalen Kitna dismissed from the program, Florida needed to augment its quarterback depth in the portal. Mertz possesses loads of Power 5 experience, though he isn’t the dual-threat player Napier relishes. Mertz has minus-21 career rushing yards, along with eight career touchdowns.

Miller was sidelined by a thumb injury most of this season after transferring from Ohio State. He finally surfaced in the Las Vegas Bowl, making the start in a 30-3 loss to Oregon State. Miller completed 13 of 22 passes for 180 yards, raising his career attempts total to 36.

Five-star commitment Jaden Rashada, primed to sign with the Gators on Wednesday, would need to make massive strides in order to lead the offense as a true freshman. The other scholarship quarterback on the roster, freshman Max Brown, redshirted this season and did not see any action.

(Photo: Jeff Hanisch / USA Today)
