The temperature at kickoff was 6 degrees, making it the coldest regular season game in club history.  Windchills were minus-16 and wind gusts were 30 mph.  When the tarp came off Saturday morning, the field was snow-covered and slick.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Deshaun Watson after Browns frigid loss to Saints\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0hcFvnlXQq0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5JJV7F75IVDJREFN4RKGZBL6PI\">The loss, in front of an estimated 20,000 fans who braved the wicked weather on Christmas Eve day, dropped the Browns to 6-9 and mathematically eliminated them from playoff contention.  They only had about a 1% chance as it was, but hope always springs eternal in Browns town, and in the locker room.  It also ensured that the Browns can finish no better than 8-9 for the second straight season with two games left, against the Commanders and Steelers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R6GC2BBEFRCUXBYIHDYSI5K3WU\"><u><b>Recommended Browns stories<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AWE67JXSUFEVLLYMHT35YAXRHQ\">The Saints, who flew to town a day early and conducted their walk-through in their hotel ballroom on Friday, improved to 6-9 and kept their playoff hopes alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EB5PV6WBCJC4RCSUHZL5XZ33JQ\">\u201cIt&#8217;s obviously just frustrating when you have as much talent as we have on the team and two years in a row you get eliminated from the playoffs before the season&#8217;s over,\u201d said cornerback Greg Newsome II.  \u201cIt&#8217;s very frustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UYVQNPJ6WRBGXFT3VTDNVV25PY\">Myles Garrett, who observed recently that missing the playoffs would mean a failed season, has now made the postseason only once in his six-year career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QEAW5KXLYRHOXDHVRJI45CN3J4\">\u201cVery disappointing,\u201d he said.  \u201cIt&#8217;s not where we want to be.  It&#8217;s not where we expected to be at the beginning of the season.  At the end of the day, you have to keep on fighting.  You have to have pride about your job and what you do.  A lot of guys in this locker room love this game and want to give their all to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UNBYO7TRYNA7BJD3P62E3RQ2QI\">The Browns, who invited their sparse crowd to fill in the lower bowl of the stadium, imposed their will on the Saints early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the second quarter on a 12-yard Watson run and a 30-yard Cade York field goal.  They also led 10-3 at the half.  But they let the Saints beat them at their own game \u2014 by pounding the ball on the ground \u2014 the right strategy for the conditions.  The Saints, who scored 17 straight points, put the ball in the hands of Alvin Kamara (20 carrying, 76 yards) and Taysom Hill (9 carrying, 56 yards) and outrushed the Browns 152 yards to 124.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Myles Garrett after Browns lose to Saints\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d4R2OppsvOw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TUPDH4IWEJHR5JUXVORNIFPY7Q\">\u201cThey&#8217;re both just talented runners,\u201d said Garrett.  \u201cBoth are good at breaking tackles and making guys miss.  From what I could see, there were some circumstances where it was just that they were just making plays that they make because they&#8217;re top-level talent.  They&#8217;re good at what they do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GT7OYUFOLVBEXDGC4B5WJZDLEA\">Kevin Stefanski defended passing the ball 31 times \u2014 as many times as Nick Chubb (24 for 92 yards) and Kareem Hunt (7 carries, 8 yards) ran it \u2014 despite the fierce winds and slippery track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NAZDRRQI3RDGDMJXU6BGWETQB4\">\u201cJust obviously each time trying to put our guys in position,\u201d Stefanski said.  \u201cCouple of times you had the wind, you&#8217;re trying to throw possession throws.  Felt like there were some opportunities both in the run and the pass.  We just didn&#8217;t come through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P7WDYKHNNVCCFB5RXRGCFXKMWU\">Despite the tough sledding, Watson (15-of-31, 135 yards, one interception, 47.1 rating) had a chance to win or tie the game at the end, but didn&#8217;t get much help from his receivers.  With the Browns trailing 17-10, Watson took over at his 20 with 5:16 left and all three timeouts remaining.  He found Amari Cooper (6-of-10 targets, 72 yards) for 14 yards on third and 13 to the Saints&#8217; 33, and then hit David Bell with an 18-yard pass over the middle to the Saints&#8217; 15 with 43 seconds left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q5XYKT77FNDAROUXIGKR5H4NSI\">On first down, Watson threw incomplete to Cooper out of the back of the end zone, and second down, he hit a tightly-covered Donovan Peoples Jones (1-of-5 for 2 yards) in the hands in the back left corner of the end zone, where he dropped it.  On third down, Watson fired a post route to David Njoku in stride at the covered goal-line, where he was by Tyrann Mathieu.  Njoku dropped it too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WYPW2JQUGNEO7DTDCX627F5GMQ\">Watson, 2-2 in his four starts, was sacked for a 7-yard loss on fourth down to seal the Saints&#8217; victory and get their Christmas music cranked up.  But it was the back-to-back drops with the game on the line that were the backbreakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GE6VURUSJZERFPIB36FDX2EPDU\">\u201cAnytime we have the opportunity to finish out or score points down there, we always feel like we can make those opportunities and take advantage of them,\u201d Watson said.  \u201cToday we just kind of missed out on some of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MBLTRNATDNEWJPOU33HTSSG2SE\">Njoku (2-of-5 for 14 yards), a newly-minted Pro Bowl alternate, felt so bad about the drop, he approached Watson at his locker and apologized.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u2018I dropped that ball\u2019 David Njoku takes blame in Browns loss to Saints\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xy2PiLpCM_0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TKEBNOVQ4VETLNJVDEJNSC3UKQ\">\u201cI feel like I let him down and the team down,\u201d Njoku said.  \u201cHe was like, &#8216;no, it&#8217;s all right, we&#8217;ve just got to \u2026&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6HZOE7X6XJE4FGN74GMMKWWGLY\">Watson accepted and offered words of encouragement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RY2NRXOWRRASXPKPSSIWYCZ6YE\">\u201cIt was just a missed opportunity, but stuff like that happens,\u201d he said.  \u201cNext time, we&#8217;ll be sure to capitalize on it.  You have respect for Dave and everything he brings to this team and this organization.  That just shows how much he really cares about it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U2RANXHONBD2DAV5CEDSIPDGTQ\">Njoku refused to blame the drop on the cold and wind, which carried the ball hither and yon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W4PATIVOGNFIPLTG3TG5ABRVQA\">\u201cI mean, yeah, but that&#8217;s no excuse,\u201d he said.  \u201cI dropped that ball.  I&#8217;ve got to own up to that and I am.  that&#8217;s what happened.  We&#8217;ve got to get better.  Myself, I&#8217;ve got to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J7M5K2NEHBEO5OZHZXWMXPMFII\">Njoku, who said this week he believes he and Watson can do some of the same things as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, knows his QB will come right back to him next week in Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WU33Y7EHINFE3A65VKBDSX45AQ\">\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d he said.  \u201cI know he has complete confidence in me after coming to him and we&#8217;ll get this thing rolling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"24HIKPC73NFQHIMDHYW2RPB2DA\">Cooper and Bell also dropped passes that could&#8217;ve made a difference in the outcome.  On third and 10 from the Saints&#8217; 12, Watson shifted around and bought some time until Cooper came wide open in the back of the end zone.  He delivered a perfect ball, but Cooper \u2014 who went over 1,000 yards for the sixth time in his eight-year career \u2014 dropped it when he slid on the snow and lost his footing.  The Browns settled for the field goal for the 10-0 lead with 4:07 left in the half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WBQGXNJGCNEEVA6NHCZEHGV2DU\">\u201cThe opportunity was there,\u201d Watson said.  \u201cWe just didn&#8217;t capitalize on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Reaction to Browns 17-10 loss to Saints in sub-zero windchills\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/egWmcvJ4x-M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5VBPUKTL4ZDGHANQQBCWC3XAJA\">Bell, who missed last week with a toe injury, dropped a short pass to the left late in the third quarter that was picked off by Daniel Sorensen and returned 36 yards to start New Orleans at the Browns&#8217; 15. Four play later, Kamara plowed in from 4 yards out to produce the final margin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QOCFBSF7PFBQ7LYSY2RREUQJBY\">\u201cHe trusted me to catch the ball and I just dropped it,\u201d Bell said.  \u201cThat&#8217;s what it was.  As a receiver you take big pride in catching the ball and unfortunately I couldn&#8217;t come down with it there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4PRYQ7A57BFODA2VXMHTMQXOOQ\">On other occasions, Watson tried to play the fickle winds, and failed.  He overthrew Cooper by about 5 yards at the goal-line early in the fourth quarter, and then sailed one over Peoples-Jones&#8217; head on fourth and 2 from the Browns&#8217; 39 with the Saints clinging to their 17-10 edge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PMUTE4C4DFGZ5NTV7RURRLVV6Y\">\u201c\u201dThat was the play call,\u201d Watson said.  \u201cThey took away Coop and double-teamed him.  The other factor was going to the field.  DPJ came open, and we just missed out.  I tried to throw it to DPJ and it kind of sailed over his head.  A couple of deep throws, another one to Coop (WR Amari Cooper), he split the safety and the corner, and that one caught the wind and it kind of sailed on us.  You can&#8217;t really control that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4OFW6QZEOZE33FMY4B6PSB3GEQ\">Watson scored the Browns&#8217; lone TD when her ran in from the 12 on the first play of the second quarter, high-stepping the last three yards into the end zone.  Afterwards, he jumped into the VIP field box and celebrated with fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BTOQLURVFBHB7LJEOQKMLCZXT4\">\u201cIt was cool,\u201d Watson said.  \u201cIt was good to just go up there.  I know they enjoyed it.  I gave them the football, too.  I was just going in, just kind of hopped up and just enjoyed it.  It was fun to get in the end zone and celebrate with the fans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MCBRLK5A6ND23IFJBAQOZYTZOM\">Watson&#8217;s TD cashed in on Grant Delpit&#8217;s interception off Andy Dalton with 2:44 left in the first, off a pass tipped by tight end Juwan Johnson, tightly covered by John Johnson III.  Delpit returned the ball 40 yards and jumped into the Dawg Pound, where he was mobbed by fans and teammates alike.  Delpit thought it might be the Browns&#8217; day, especially when Watson scored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4WWXAJUDGFDHRPFG7THPQJUGEQ\">\u201cOf course,\u201d Delpit said.  \u201cIt happened early in the game.  We had to finish, but it was a good play.  Good man coverage.  I was in the middle of the field and just kind of read his eyes and got a gift.  (But) we didn&#8217;t get it done in all three phases, so one play is not enough.  We need to keep stacking them and finish in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TWQIECB4TZBL3KYSYFC2D55RSM\">The Saints executed the dreaded double dip, kicking a field goal as time expired in the half to pull to within 10-3, and then marching back out in the second half and scoring a TD on their first possession, an 8-yard run by Hill, to tie it at 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4YVQS2H6YFF53HQXCTOMURNWO4\">\u201cAfter the half, we have to get our offense back out there,\u201d Delpit said.  \u201cWe have to take advantage of that and give it back to our offense, no matter how they are doing.  Just always make sure they are on the field as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JWVFCINZINCRFMXQB2KT7AMPL4\">Despite the loss, Watson made more strides, demonstrating that he has the arm to slice the ball through high winds off the lake.  He threw too much, but showed he can handle extreme conditions even though he struggled in the second half \u2014 in large part because of the drops \u2014 completing just 8-of-19 attempts for 73 yards with one interception for a 31.2 rating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZSW5JC2RERHDNE6KFN2IT2BMMY\">\u201cNot many people who are playing right now have played in weather like this,\u201d Garrett said.  \u201cIt&#8217;s not just him.  He&#8217;s still learning the system and still coming back out there (from the) extended break.  There are a lot of things that he&#8217;s been working against and working through.  We&#8217;re going to keep on sticking with him for the ride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZVKTLWMDSZA2FLF2ALAAF74U2M\">\u201cHe&#8217;s very talented.  We&#8217;ve seen that.  Something like this, you really can&#8217;t put it on the quarterback or either quarterback.  Especially going long, the wind can take it wherever it wants to and even short throws.  He was still making plays with his feet and still making big plays and first downs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TCVGFUPPQBELFAU7HT4J3RRC3M\">Watson vowed to lay it all on the line in the last two games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7F6MTPVNXJDKRBPFFNWT34QT4Y\">\u201cWe have to finish strong, not just for ourselves because we have to have pride in what we do.  We have to come to work each and every day and give everything that we have,\u201d he said.  \u201cWe can&#8217;t just go out there and lollygag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BTMOZ2NYT5HZDO2DGTUHGC6EMY\">Cooper is confident the future is bright with Watson running the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SYQWDIKCLNC4RMVQRHAJ3TJUKM\">\u201cWe can be a lot better and we will be a lot better, trust me,\u201d Cooper said.  \u201cIt&#8217;s not even close, trust me, we&#8217;ll be a lot better.  You never know what the future holds, what tomorrow holds, you can only be where your feet are, and 2023 is close, but it&#8217;s far.  Especially the 2023 season.
