\n\tRefresh for latest<\/em>\u2026:<\/strong> James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water<\/em> rang in the New Year with another $186.7M<\/strong> from 52 international markets for a $1,379B<\/strong> global cume to date. Including China, the film rose 6% from last weekend’s Christmas frame offshore (excluding China, it was even with last session). The international box office now stands at an estimated $957M<\/strong>meaning Way of Water<\/em> will cross $1B overseas early this week; when it gets there, it will be only the 2nd movie to the benchmark during the pandemic era. <\/p>\n \n \tThe 20th Century Studios\/Disney title is now the 15th biggest movie of all time globally, overtaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2<\/em>. <\/p>\n \n \tOverseas, it remains the No. 1 non-local movie in all markets and is the 13th biggest international release ever. It’s also the highest grossing release of the year offshore and the 2nd of the pandemic. <\/p>\n \n \tThe midweeks were very strong and the majority of markets posted a third weekend that was higher than the second (which played over Christmas), including the UK (+51%), Australia (+44%), Germany (+40%), France (+24%), Italy (+4%), Brazil (+1%) and Mexico (+1%). Many others saw slight drops. <\/p>\n \n\tchina<\/strong>which had been initially worrisome, saw a 42% jump from last weekend, posting an estimated $36.9M for the session which lifts the estimated cume to $152.8M, passing Jurassic World Dominion<\/em> as the biggest Hollywood import of the year. Local ticketing platform Maoyan has increased its final projection to RMB 1.48B ($210M) which, at historical rates, would overtake the first movie’s original performance in the market. <\/p>\n \n \tRegionally, Europe has grossed an estimated $428M to date (70% 3D\/premium formats), Asia-Pacific has taken an estimated $424M (70% 3D\/PLFs) and Latin America has amassed an estimated $103M (53% 3D\/ PLFs).<\/p>\n \n \tin its third weekend of release, the Na’vi lay claim to the highest grossing title during the pandemic era in France, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria and Lithuania; and the biggest studio movie of the pandemic in Korea, Vietnam, India and Thailand.<\/p>\n \n \tThe Top 10 overseas markets to date are china<\/strong> ($152.8M), France<\/strong> ($95.1M), Korea<\/strong> ($74.9M), Germany<\/strong> ($67.2M), UK<\/strong> ($54.2M), india<\/strong> ($49.3M), Mexico City<\/strong> ($37.3M), Australia<\/strong> ($34.3M), Italy<\/strong> ($30.5M) and Spain<\/strong> ($28.3M).<\/p>\n \n \tWhile some offshore markets see vacations conclude this week, several are still in a local holiday period.<\/p>\n \n \tIn global IMAX, Way of Water<\/em> grew by 4% this weekend, posting the 2nd<\/sup> best ever result for a 3rd<\/sup> weekend with $28.6M. In 19 days it has reached $152.2M in worldwide IMAX box office, now behind only Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em> and Avengers: Endgame<\/em> for the format. The offshore portion of the worldwide total is $96.9M, the 3rd<\/sup> highest International IMAX gross ever, behind Endgame<\/em> and the first Avatar<\/em>. China delivered $6.8M of the offshore frame, an increase of 19% over last weekend, for a Middle Kingdom cume of $35.7M, more than 24% of the nationwide total.<\/p>\n \n \tEighteen countries ring in the New Year with Avatar: The Way of Water<\/em> now officially their biggest ever IMAX release (the growing list includes such key markets as India, Germany, Thailand and South Korea, along with France, Turkey, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland). <\/p>\n
