Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp criticised the performance of referee Stuart Attwell following Monday’s 3-1 loss away to Brentford, saying that the hosts’ third goal was a “clear foul”.

The defeat was Liverpool’s first against Brentford in all competitions since 1938, and it came via goals from Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, plus an own goal by Ibrahima Konate.

Mbeumo’s clinching goal came in the 84th minute. The forward collected a long ball forward, made slight contact with Konate that sent the defender to the ground, and slotted the ball home past Alisson.

Klopp said after the game that he could not respect the goal, adding: “If you have ever played football and run a full sprint and you get a light push, you go down because you can’t keep balance, that’s how it is and you see that with Ibou (Konate).”

Asked by beIN Sports about speaking to the match officials about the decisions, Klopp said: “It’s actually exactly the same as I would talk to my microwave, you get no response really. It’s always the same.

“VAR hides behind the phrase ‘not clear and obvious’. The referee needs to explain that.”

Klopp also criticised the officiating of the physical nature of Brentford’s players during their offensive set-pieces, saying to Sky Sports that they “stretch the rules” in terms of contact.

“I don’t expect anything in our favour, but I do expect holding is holding, pushing is pushing and fouling is fouling. There is a reason Brentford are so successful at set pieces offensively and not defensively. There are things you can do in the other box.”

Brentford appeared to score from a corner kick three different times during the first half – two were ruled out for offside but Konate’s own goal stood.

“I am not happy with the way we defended the set-pieces. We did not behave perfectly but Brentford stretch the rules in these moments. Obviously that is what you can do now with the referees.

“Don’t get me wrong, that’s smart, but they do. If you would single out all of the situations you would find five fouls but because it’s so chaotic nobody sees it in the end. That’s what they do and it’s good, really, really good.”

Asked to respond to the claim that his side stretch the rules, Brentford head coach Thomas Frank said: “I guess we have some very, very good refs. We have four on the pitch and then a VAR room and I think it’s never been more difficult to score a goal.

“But I’m of course happy he praised us and it’s a credit to the good work we do on our offensive set pieces.”

Klopp also lamented the missed opportunities Liverpool had to take the lead early on, saying: “We started pretty well in the game. We could have, maybe should have been 2-0 up before they have the first corner. We fought back, but it was much more of a game they wanted than a game we wanted.

“We had moments in the second half and we knew we needed it again and again. We were then in a really good moment, but then we can’t push it through. They could dictate it.

“The game was decided by the second goal, which is absolutely our fault. We are not happy with the performance, clearly.”

The result lifted Brentford to seventh in the Premier League table, just two points behind Liverpool in sixth place.
