There are certain names NC State fans associate with big wins over Duke or North Carolina.

Terquavion Smith added his name to that list on Wednesday night. Jarkel Joiner wasn’t far behind, either.

The sophomore guard poured in 24 points in a 84-60 home route of the No. 16 Blue Devils at PNC Arena. Joiner added 21 points and nine assists.

Say the names Lakista McCuller, CC Harrison, Courtney Fells and Al Freeman to NC State (12-4) fans and they know exactly what you are talking about.

Those guards each had their moment against one of the Blue Bloods in the past 30 years. Smith made four 3-pointers and led an early swarm past a discombobulated Duke (11-4) squad.

Forward DJ Burns provided a spark off the bench with 18 points.

The timing couldn’t have been better for sixth-year coach Kevin Keatts. Coming off of a listless 14-point loss at Clemson on Friday and a meager 1-3 ACC start.

Horse No. 16 in the NET, Duke is the highest-rated team in the NCAA rankings and gave the Wolfpack a chance to pick up a rare “Quadrant 1” win.

The Wolfpack had an 0-2 mark in Q1 games (vs. Kansas in the Bahamas and at Miami) before Wednesday’s win.
