Georgia has had no shortage of great players over the history of its program, but it’s pretty clear who has the strongest argument against Bennett in terms of greatest of all-time.

Running back Herschel Walker has been revived by Bulldogs fans for the magical three-year run he had in Athens from 1980-82. The Wrightsville, Georgia native burst onto the scene by running over Tennessee’s Bill Bates during a freshman campaign in which he rushed for 1,616 yards and 15 touchdowns and was instrumental in Georgia winning the 1980 national championship.

Walker didn’t let up over the years, and by the time he capped off his 1982 season — for which he won the Heisman — he had taken 994 carries for 5,259 yards and 49 touchdowns. To this day, he still owns numerous program records, including rushing yards in a career, most carries in a career, most rushing touchdowns in a career, average yards per game in a career, most games with 100 yards or more in a single season and most rushes in a game.

The argument that could separate Walker and Bennett is the distinction between most talented Bulldog of all-time versus the greatest. Walker played like a man amongst boys for his entire career at Georgia, and while the Bulldogs did plenty of winning while No. 34 was on the field, they won it all during Walker’s freshman year but never replicated the feat. A win over TCU would give Bennett and his teammates something even Dooley’s greatest teams were never able to accomplish.

You can make the argument for other players in place of Walker — perhaps Sinkwich, Charley Trippi, David Pollack, Todd Gurley or Nick Chubb — but there’s no denying Walker holds the mantle for most when it comes to the greatest Georgia player. Many will stick with Walker as their go-answer no matter what happens Monday night — at the very least, you have to acknowledge there would be a case to be made for Bennett.
