Former Cal football quarterback Davis Webb will start for the New York Giants on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Niners need a Giants win in order to have any chance of playing themselves into the NFC’s top seed and a first-round bye.<\/p>\n

The odds are extremely long, though. Webb set two single-season passing records for Cal in 2016 (passing attempts and completions) and tied several others (including total touchdowns and 300-yard passing games) while playing for then-head coach Sonny Dykes. But today he will lead a litany of backups for New York, which is already locked into the NFC’s No. 6 seeds. Philly is favored by more than two touchdowns.<\/p>\n

The Eagles, meanwhile, are expected to get back quarterback Jalen Hurts, who missed two straight games with an injury to his throwing shoulder. During his absence, the Eagles have gone 0-2 with Gardner Minshew under center, letting the 49ers sneak back into the top seed conversation.<\/p>\n
Webb’s starting nod is unique in that the former third-round draft pick was elevated from the practice squad, leap-frogging 33-year-old backup Tyrod Taylor. The fifth quarterback taken in the 2017 draft, Webb initially appear to be a potential heir apparent to Eli Manning, but was waived after just one season in New York. He then spent three years as a third stringer in Buffalo, where he reportedly turned down an informal offer to be the Bills quarterbacks coach this past offseason to take one last run at playing.
