The unlikeliest of main characters could help write one of the most important chapters to the 2022 San Francisco 49ers’ story on Sunday.

Former Cal football quarterback Davis Webb will start for the New York Giants on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Niners need a Giants win in order to have any chance of playing themselves into the NFC’s top seed and a first-round bye.

The odds are extremely long, though. Webb set two single-season passing records for Cal in 2016 (passing attempts and completions) and tied several others (including total touchdowns and 300-yard passing games) while playing for then-head coach Sonny Dykes. But today he will lead a litany of backups for New York, which is already locked into the NFC’s No. 6 seeds. Philly is favored by more than two touchdowns.
