A recent R-Code exploit can crash the game or potentially do worse

In pretty much any other game, stream sniping would entail using a live broadcast to gain an unfair advantage, but there’s something much more sinister afoot in Guilty Gear Strive.

There’s currently a very bad exploit in Guilty Gear Strive that some streamers and targeted players are reporting hackers can use to render the game completely unplayable.

Malicious coders have figured out a way to change a player’s R-Code in real time, which can cause all sorts of trouble depending on how much of a jerk the person feels like being.

The main use of the exploit can immediately freeze and crash the game during an online match for potentially both players, which requires a hard reset to get out of.

On top of that, however, some like pro player Moist|Hotashi are reporting the R-Code hack can even cause a memory leak in the Strive client that bogs down the game so much it severely drops the frame rate and makes it functionally unplayable, even in Training Mode.

whoever is using this r-code exploit can now use this vulnerability to cause the GGST client to have some sort of leak, slowing the game to an unplayable crawl

this occurs even in training mode, and doesnt happen with steam in offline mode

Some users are also claiming the hackers can mimic a player’s R-Code to send impersonating messages, which opens the door to a potential ban problem too.

Unfortunately, there’s no real way to avoid these issues without playing completely offline, but the attacks are largely focused on notable streamers and players — although technically anybody could be targeted.

Since Strive was updated to feature cross-platform play in December, this is not just a PC player problem either, as some are reporting the PlayStation versions of Guilty Gear can be impacted by the exploit too.

As of the time of reporting, Arc System Works hasn’t released an official statement on the matter, but Producer Shini Zack released a tweet earlier in the week saying “Back in office. Looking through all the reports.”

This exploit is basically making it impossible to stream Strive without worry, but the hackers can hit someone any time they try to go online at all by following their profiles.

Beyond just being terrible for streamers, the timing is worse for the whole competitive community because any online tournament is a potential target, and Frosty Faustings 15 is less than a month away as the last Arc World Tour qualifying event when even just practicing puts them at risk.

It is also important to note this current R-Code exploit is similar but still a different hack than the one that popped up earlier in 2022 that caused disconnects by changing player names.

With ArcSys assuredly aware of the exploit, a patch to get rid of it will hopefully weeks be arriving in the coming days / especially since any discussion or content creation for Strive has been brought to a standstill.

Until then, however, it’s inadvisable to stream Guilty Gear Strive matches online, and players should be careful about playing online in general. It’s also probably a good idea to back up your save data just in case.
