There will be no fifth straight loss to the 49ers in the playoffs for Aaron Rodgers. That’s because his Packers blew their chance against a Lions team with nothing to play for in Week 18, losing 20-16 on Sunday night.

With the Seahawks’ win over the Rams earlier Sunday, the Lions were eliminated from playoff contention. All Green Bay had to do to make the playoffs and head to Santa Clara as the No. 7 seed was beat the Lions, who lost tiebreakers to the 9-8 Seahawks. Instead, Dan Campbell’s team went Kneecaps Mode and did the public service of sending Rodgers home early.

Thanks to inspired play from Detroit and a particularly idiotic Packers outing, the Seahawks are in as the NFC’s last seed. They’ll face the 49ers next Saturday at 1:30 pm, the third matchup between the teams this season.

The 49ers will surely welcome the chance to play Geno Smith and company. Seattle has been dismal since a surprising 6-3 start, losing five out of six games before backing into the playoffs with wins over the Jets and Rams. San Francisco manhandled their rivals both times they played in 2022, cruising to a 27-7 win behind Jimmy Garoppolo in September (in the game that Trey Lance broke his foot) and a 21-13 win three weeks ago that was n’t nearly as close as the final scoreline.

The 49ers’ 38-10 win over the Cardinals and the Eagles’ win over the Giants earlier Sunday meant that the Eagles (14-3) had the NFC’s lone bye, while the Niners (13-4) were locked in as the second seed . Green Bay had rally from 4-8 to 8-8 to earn a win-and-in game. But the Lions, with nothing to play for, hung around all night. Down 16-13, Jared Goff led the Lions on an eight-minute fourth-quarter touchdown drive that was punctuated by a bizarre ejection for Packers linebacker Quay Walker, who shoved a Lions trainer. Incredibly, it was his second ejection for shoving a non-player this year. Trailing for the first time on the next drive, Rodgers threw a backbreaking interception to Kerby Joseph, the third time Joseph picked off Rodgers this season. (Joseph had another interception called off by a penalty Sunday night.)

Rodgers walked off the field in apparent tears and refused to give a Lions player his jersey, inevitably fueling his annual off-season retirement speculation. Here are some things our columnist Drew Magary has written about Rodgers over the years:

-“joyless asshole”

-“walking Substack”

-“demonstrably awful person”

-“too chickens—t to fix himself”

-“There is no grudge he’s not willing to take to extremes and no bit of personal scrutiny he won’t spit upon.”

-“self-prick”

-“Tony Romo without the personality”

-“couldn’t win a big game even if Joe Rogan was hosting the trophy presentation”
