Jim Harbaugh has reportedly wrapped up his virtual interview with the Denver Broncos and emerged as \u201ca top candidate\u201d for their head-coaching vacancy, according to a Tuesday morning report.<\/p>\n

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the Michigan head coach spoke to the Broncos’ ownership group for more than two hours on Monday, kicking off their search for a new head coach after the firing of Nathaniel Hackett on Dec. 26.<\/p>\n

The interview comes days after Harbaugh issued a statement on Thursday saying, \u201cI expect that I will be enthusiastically coaching Michigan in 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n

That same day, the school received a notice of from the NCAA alleging multiple Level II violations by the football program, and a Level I violation against Harbaugh for his cooperation with investigators.<\/p>\n

Harbaugh’s participation marks the second straight year he has interviewed for an NFL head-coaching vacancy, after flying to Minneapolis last February to interview in-person with the Vikings. He was never offered that job, later telling reporters of his desire to return to the NFL and win a Super Bowl, and returned to Michigan.<\/p>\n

For over a month now, Harbaugh has been saying publicly that he \u201cexpects\u201d to be back at Michigan this fall, every time qualifying his remark with \u201cno man knows the future,\u201d leaving the door open for a possible exit.<\/p>\n

Harbaugh signed a new five-year contract last February that pays him more than $7 million per year, but with incentives and deferred compensation he earned more than $10 million in 2022. His buyout is set to drop from $3 million to $2.25 million on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Broncos are set to interview defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero later today, NFL Network reports, while requests to interview former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris have been submitted. <\/p>\n

Harbaugh, 59, coached four seasons in San Francisco from 2011 to 2014, compiling a 44-19-1 record while leading the 49ers to three straight NFC championship games and a Super Bowl appearance. He left the organization amid internal strife to take over at Michigan, his alma mater, where he’s gone 74-25, won back-to-back Big Ten titles and reached the College Football Playoff twice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
