However, Poles said the team \u201cwill be open to everything\u201d regarding the No.  1 overall selection.  Here&#8217;s what you should know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poles said he plans on Justin Fields being the team&#8217;s starting quarterback next season, adding that he has to be \u201cabsolutely blown away\u201d to take a QB with the first pick.<\/li>\n<li>Fields threw for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season while also rushing for 1,143 yards and eight TDs.<\/li>\n<li>The Bears have eight total draft picks: No.  56 (via Baltimore), 65, 103, 134 (via Baltimore), 136, 149 (via New England), 220.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>backstory<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fields improved during his second season in the league, and Poles seemed optimistic about what the QB could achieve next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed the ability to be a playmaker,\u201d the GM said.  \u201cHe has to get better as a passer, and I&#8217;m excited to see him take those steps as we move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poles also emphasized that Chicago isn&#8217;t married to its current draft position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we have really good flexibility to help this team, regardless if it&#8217;s making the pick there (at No. 1) or moving back a little bit or moving back a lot.  We&#8217;ll be open to everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can evaluate the talent there, we can see what player presents themselves in that position to help us, and then we can look at the scenarios,\u201d he said.  \u201cIf the phones go off and there are certain situations where that can help us, then we&#8217;ll go down that avenue, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bears finished the 2022-23 season 3-14 after a loss to the Vikings on Sunday.  The Texans would have clinched the first pick with a loss to the Colts, but Houston won 32-31 with a successful two-point conversion and slide to the No.  2 spots.<\/p>\n<p>The Cardinals, Colts and Seahawks round out the first five picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Could the Bears stick with the No.  1 pick?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s definitely a possibility.  Poles reiterated that he values \u200b\u200bthe premier positions.  The Bears plan on sticking with Fields as their starter.  After quarterback comes pass rushers and pass protectors (offensive linemen).  If Poles doesn&#8217;t like his trade offers for the first selection, Alabama pass rusher Will Anderson and Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter should be considered.  The Bears ranked last in sacks and quarterback hits this season. Cox \/ Getty Images)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Why might the Bears trade down?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Poles knows that teams will be calling about the first overall pick because teams desperately need quarterbacks.  The Texans (picks No. 2 and 12), Colts (No. 4), Raiders (No. 7), Panthers (No. 9) and Titans (No. 11) should all be involved in this year&#8217;s QB class.  There are always a few surprise teams, too.  With Fields at QB and so many other roster holes to fill, it&#8217;s a special opportunity for Poles.  He definitely enjoys having that flexibility.  He said that multiple times.  \u201cYou can be in this situation where you can really help your team with moving back,\u201d he said.  \u2014 <em>jahns <\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s next for Justin Fields?<\/h2>\n<p>Poles referred to Fields as \u201cimpactful\u201d and that he \u201cshowed the ability to be a playmaker.\u201d  But the GM also noted that Fields \u201chas to get better as a passer.\u201d  He&#8217;s right, and Fields knows it, too.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears were 32nd in the league in passing and that&#8217;s not solely on the offensive line and wide receivers.  With all the cap space and draft capital, the Bears can better build around Fields, but he has to show improvement as well.  When Poles was asked about possibly taking a quarterback first overall, he responded, \u201cI would have to be absolutely blown away to make that type of decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We could spend the next few months speculating if that&#8217;s actually possible, but Poles saw what everyone else in Chicago did, that Fields elevated the offense.
